A 21-year-old Sequim man is accused of accidentally shooting his girlfriend while her 1-month-old child was three feet away.

Sequim police officers received a report of a shooting with a female shot in the leg on the 700 block of East Cedar Street at 6:01 p.m. Sunday.

Sequim Police Sgt. Sean Madison said arriving officers found Ashlye Wasnock, 21, crying on the floor with her leg wrapped in a blanket, and her 22-year-old boyfriend, Markus, aka Mark, Tierney, in the apartment. Also in the apartment at the time of the shooting was Wasnock’s infant, Madison said.

Wasnock was transported by ambulance to Olympic Memorial Hospital for treatment and released later in the evening, he said.

Detectives interviewed witnesses who provided information that conflicted with the statements made to investigators by Tierney and Wasnock, Madison said.

According to a probable cause report, neighbors told police they heard the gunshot and then a woman yelling, “I told you so! I told you so!”

Further interviews indicated Tierney fired the weapon while showing it off to a friend. The bullet went through the living room wall and into the bedroom, striking his girlfriend, Wasnock, in the leg while the infant was approximately 3 feet away from her, officers said.

Police found the weapon in a culvert several blocks away where it was dumped following the shooting. Investigators also found drug paraphernalia, packaging, scales and heroin residue while processing the scene.  The gun, a .40- caliber pistol, was reported stolen in Clallam County in April, officers said.

Tierney is in custody at the Clallam County jail on investigation of reckless endangerment and possession of a stolen firearm. Superior Court Judge Ken Williams set bond at $15,000. The case is being referred to the Clallam County Prosecutor’s Office for charging.

The infant was taken into protective custody and placed by Child Protective Services with the maternal grandparents, Madison said.
