County burn ban is in effect

A burn ban is in effect in Clallam County through Monday, Oct. 1, unless conditions warrant an earlier closure.

 

The ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires (3 feet in diameter by 2 feet in height), which are permitted unless extreme conditions force further bans. For more information, contact the local fire district or see www.clallam.net.


Deferrals explained

Stop the Checkpoints sponsors a community information meeting — on Pres. Obama’s executive order deferring deportation  of immigrant youth brought to the U.S. before age 16 — from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the Museum at the Carnegie, 207 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

 

Attorney Lisa Seifert explains the expected process and timeline for applying for deferral and also gives cautions for undocumented youth and their families.

 


SARC to give festival discounts

During the Lavender Festival, July 20-22, Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center general admission prices are discounted by 25 percent: Prices will be $6/adult, $3/youth and $1.50/child. SARC also offers 10 percent off six-month SARC passes for all three days of the festival.

 

The special price is available at both the SARC booth at Carrie Blake Park and the SARC facility at 610 N. Fifth Ave. Only checks are accepted at the Park location.


Guild shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St., is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 7. 

 

The shop features summer apparel for the family, furniture/household goods and jewelry.

 

All white-tagged items are marked half-price.

 

Volunteers are always welcome; call 683-7044.


Senior Menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave.

 

Suggested donation is $5 ($7 guest) and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491.

 

Menus are subject to change.

 

Thursday July 5: Pea salad, pork chop, baked potato, mixed vegetables, ice cream w/fruit

Friday July 6: Green salad, clam chowder, grilled ham ‘n’ cheese

Monday July 9: Green salad, beef roast, potatoes/carrots, bread, dessert

Tuesday July 10: Cream of broccoli soup, seafood salad, dinner roll, rice pudding

Wednesday July 11: Soup, patty melt, oven roasted potatoes, fresh fruit.


Holiday BBQ to/benefit veterans

Hardy’s Market, 10200 Old Olympic Highway, Sequim, hosts a Fourth of July barbecue today to support local veterans from 11 a.m. until the food runs out. Veterans eat free; music is by Cort Armstrong & Friends.  Donations are $2/ice cream; $2/hot dogs; and $3/hamburgers, with all proceeds going to local veterans groups.


Paper clutter workshop set

Brenda Spandrio, aka The Declutter Lady, offers a free workshop, “Managing Paper Clutter,” on Thursday, July 12, at the Quality Inn, 134 River Road, Sequim. Participants can attend the one-hour workshop at 3:30 p.m. or at 5:30 p.m.

Wellness forum explains GMOs

Jeri Weinhold, B.A., M.S., of the GMO Awareness Group presents a free WOW! Working on Wellness Forum, “Genetically Modified Organisms,” at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Olympic Medical Park, 840 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. 

Her presentation covers what GMOs are, why they are different from traditionally modified seed and how they impact our lives. She includes what the options are as citizens become more aware.

Habitat seeks applicants

Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County invites families to apply for upcoming housing opportunities in Port Angeles. An informational meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave.

Both WSU Clallam County Master Gardener programs are free and open to the public.
