Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies spent Thursday morning assisting the state Department of Corrections in locating a man who fled into the woods of Solmar when they tried to arrest him.

 

Sgt. John Keegan said just before 9 a.m. officers with DOC attempted to arrest James R. Vines on an outstanding warrant when he powered through their control holds and fled from a residence on the 500 block of El Camino Drive.

 

Vines is under DOC supervision after receiving an insanity acquittal in March 2011 on a charge of attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle. According to a notice of violation filed in Clallam County Superior Court, Vines failed to report to the DOC as ordered since July 13 and had tested positive for methamphetamine consumption July 9, among 20 other violations of a similar nature that remain unresolved.

 

Officers said Vines was wearing only his jeans when he fled into the wooded area of Solmar, west of Sequim.

 

Deputies responded and formed a perimeter around the area until a K-9 unit from the Port Angeles Police Department could arrive to perform a search, Keegan said.

 

Cpl. Kevin Miller and his K-9 partner, Jag, found Vines in less than half an hour hiding in thick underbrush within the perimeter established by law enforcement, Keegan said.

 

Vines was examined at the scene by medical aid personnel for self-inflicted injuries caused by his attempt to flee through a densely wooded area without shoes or a shirt and from his encounter with the K-9 Jag.

 

Vines was booked into the Clallam County Correctional Facility for his warrant and for a new charge of resisting arrest. He remains in custody in lieu of $10,000 bond.
