American Legion Post 62 has a brand-new look, thanks to the folks at The Home Depot and other friends of America’s armed forces.

 

The work crew, which included more than two dozen volunteers, spent six days on the project.

 

Gina Hannah, Sequim store manager for The Home Depot in Sequim, had a succinct explanation as to why her company provided $10,000 for the project and why so many of the store’s employees volunteered their time: “It’s the right thing to do.”

 

Hannah said the volunteers included store managers and others from across the peninsula.

 

The store also received help from its vendors and from local folks, including Bill’s Plumbing in Sequim.

“It’s a celebration of service,” Hannah said.

 

Dave Dettra, a department supervisor at the store, said he and his troops were renovating the entire building, with a focus on the flooring and the kitchen.

 

The old tile floor, unchanged since the building’s construction in 1951, was replaced with Allure flooring, “available exclusively from The Home Depot,” Dettra said. And then he paused. “I’m just saying,” he laughed.

 

The work included pulling down and painting all of the shutters, replacing the exterior doors and some landscaping.

 

Post Commander Carl Bradshaw said he was told by a post member that The Home Depot occasionally takes on projects like this. “So I called them.”

 

“It’s been amazing what they’ve done. I just want to say a big ‘thank you.’”
