A Sequim-based group for people with developmental disabilities is hosting its inaugural “Human Bean Race/Fun Walk” Oct. 13 in conjunction with a health fair.

Mosaic, formally known as Snap, is a nonprofit United Way agency that offers educational and social support for people with developmental disabilities. With classes twice a week in Sequim and twice a week in Port Angeles, Mosaic provides many opportunities for participants to learn about cooking, healthy food choices, social cues, personal safety and to participate in theater.

Program director Bonne Smith said there are between 50 and 60 participants involved in Mosaic’s dances, classes and theater productions.

The group partners with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Angeles, the Sequim School District and Olympic Theatre Arts to house their activities.

“It was a great challenge between the cutbacks and the economy but this organization pulled together so well and is just charging forward,” she said. “We’re thrilled that we are still so vital.”

Smith said the two-mile fun walk is a fundraiser for the group and also a way to double the message of the importance of healthy choices, which is the focus of the health fair.

“The health fair was inspired by one of our former members who passed away several years ago from breast cancer: Allison Ormsby,” Smith said. “It broke our heart. It went so far so fast before anyone recognized she even had cancer and it was a short time before she was gone.”

Registration for the fun walk begins at 8 a.m. Oct. 13 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles. The walk, which starts and finishes at the church, begins at 9 a.m. and is followed by a health fair at 1 p.m. Registration is $25.
