A little thriftiness and card playing goes a long way.
Members of the Sequim-Dungeness Hospital Guild celebrated another banner year of fundraising last week at its annual luncheon on May 22, giving away $32,700 to local health professionals and groups.
That tally includes $15,000 to the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic, $11,700 to the Olympic Medical Center Laboratory for purchase of a florescent microscope and $5,000 to Peninsula College's School of Nursing.
Scholarship chairman Debbie Kahle made a $1,000 scholarship presentation to Jenna Tomajko, a Sequim graduate who is attending Chamberlain College of Nursing, in Phoenix, Ariz.
Rose Gibbs and Jean Stratton accepted the donation to the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic, lab director Steve Blackham accepted for Olympic Medical Center and Mary Hunchberger, executive director of the Peninsula College Foundation, accepted the donation to college.
"Every year we are amazed at the generosity we received," Gibbs said.
Proceeds for the donations came from sales at the guild's thrift shop on Bell Street and the Cards For Cardiacs group.
The guild boasts 95 members and about 160 members, friends and guests were on hand at the luncheon at 7 Cedars Casino's Club Seven last week. The event included a fashion show and silent auction. The group honored Norma Valeske for more than 24 years of service to the guild; she worked in the thrift shop training both cashiers and day helpers.
Guild members swore in Kasey Teal Jones as the group's new secretary. Officers for 2013 are president, Jean Janis; vice president, Addie Curtis; secretary, Kasey T. Jones; treasurer, Debbie Kahle; and thrift shop chairman, Sue Tondreau.
The guild's thrift shop opened in the 1970 and since then the shop and Cards For Cardiacs bridge group has raised nearly $2 million for local health organizations, including more than $620,000 for Clallam County Fire District 3, $680,000 for Olympic Medical Center and $430,000 for Peninsula College.
