Local groups placing America flags at two Sequim cemeteries on Saturday, May 29, are seeking help with the effort.

Members of Jack Grennan American Legion Post 62 will be at Sequim View Cemetery, 1505 Sequim Dungeness Way, at 9 a.m., and members of the Daughters of the American Revolution-Michael Trebert Chapter will be at Dungeness Cemetery, 2153 Lotzgesell Road, to place flags for Memorial Day ceremonies slates for Monday, May 31.

The public is welcome to assist in placing the flags, as well as to learn the “Do No Harm” of preserving and cleaning method for veteran grave markers. To help, email to jktretiredrn@gmail.com.

The flags will stay in place through the afternoon of Memorial Day May 31.

Post 62 each year offers Memorial Day ceremonies in Sequim; this year, the DAR-Michael Trebert Chapter is assisting with preparation.

American Legion Riders-Post 29 will provide a flag line and American Legion Post 62 hosts ceremonies on Monday, May 31. The schedule includes: 11 a.m., Sequim View Cemetery; 11:30 a.m., Jamestown Cemetery; Noon, Dungeness Cemetery; 12:30 p.m. Gardiner Community Cemetery (provided by Sequim VFW Post 4760), and 12:45 p.m., Blue Mountain Cemetery.

Veterans to be honored at Gardiner cemetery

The Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Sequim American Legion will hold Memorial Day services at Gardiner Community Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 31.

One-third of the people buried in the Gardiner Cemetery are veterans, cemetery representatives say. To honor them, a flag will be displayed on each veteran’s grave site. They will also be displayed around the cemetery. The large flags will be placed down the sidewalk.

The Gardiner Cemetery is the burial place for Marvin G. Shields, a Jefferson County native, and the only U.S. Navy Seabee to be Medal of Honor recipient.

Parking is limited at the cemetery, so attendees are asked to carpool if possible.
