Beta Nu helps continue educators’ development with grants

Ten local educators received nearly $22,000 in grants this month thanks again to the Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International — a women educators’ professional and philanthropic organization.

Sharle Osborne, vice-president of the Beta Nu chapter, said she’s proud of the fact that there was such a range of educators — including paraeducators, teachers and administrators — who applied for the Professional Educator Grants.

The list of the Fall 2018 Professional Educator Grant recipients, include:

• Teresa Barrett, Sequim High School, $2,300 for special education certification

• Karen Doran, Roosevelt Elementary School in Port Angeles, for Masters of Arts, $1,400

• Nessa Goldman, Olympic Peninsula Academy in Sequim, STEM course work, $4,350

• Stephanie Grotzke-Nash, Helen Haller Elementary in Sequim, National Board renewal, $1,250

• Pattie “Cricket” Hagan, Helen Haller Elementary in Sequim, literacy courses, $374

• Jennifer Lopez, Greywolf Elementary in Carlsborg, administrative principal certification, $5,000

• Ione Marcy, Helen Haller Elementary in Sequim, literacy courses, $374

• Joyce Mininger, Jefferson Elementary School in Port Angeles, Educational empathy workshop, $550

• Renee Mullikin, Helen Haller Elementary in Sequim, National Board renewal, $1,250

• Michelle Olsen, Roosevelt Elementary School in Port Angeles, superintendent program, $5,000

Osborne said educators can apply twice a year for Professional Educator Grants by Nov. 15 and April 15. Beta Nu also offers Future Educator Grants once a year for students who graduated from a Clallam County high school and/or Peninsula College and are enrolled in a teacher certification program.

The group also recently added Community Education Grants offering grants to local schools and nonprofits in the Sequim and Port Angeles School Districts, offering a variety of educational opportunities such as for field trips and programming.

Beta Nu is the Sequim chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for key women educators with the intent to “promote professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.”

The local chapter started in 1978 and has provided more than $350,000 in grants to Clallam County educators and future educators.

Osborne said a donation by teacher benefactors help support the grant opportunities.
