County sets shellfish harvesting restriction

The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services’ Environmental Health Division announced last week that recreational shellfish harvesting is closed to all species from Pillar Point east to Dungeness Spit because of the presence of biotoxins.

There is no closure in Dungeness Bay, but Sequim Bay, Discovery Bay and Pacific Ocean beaches are all closed to shellfish harvesting.

Sikes to help lead middle school

The Port Angeles School District has announced that Jennifer Sikes has been hired as assistant principal at Stevens Middle School.

Previously Sikes taught at Sequim Middle School and Greywolf Elementary School, she has also been the principal at Neah Bay Junior/Senior High School.

Clothing give-away set

A free clothing give-away will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 815 W. Washington St. A large quantity of like-new and gently used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing will be available. All community members are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Sequim schools to host ‘Tech-Smart Parenting’ speaker Erlacher

Helen Haller Elementary and Greywolf Elementary are teaming up to bring Dr. Jolene Erlacher to Sequim for a free presentation set for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the Sequim High School auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave.

Erlacher’s presentation on “Tech-Smart Parenting” shares that, “while the impact of technology is seen everywhere in society, its influence is perhaps most significant in our homes and families.” The program will present practices for parents in developing a healthy family culture as it relates to technology, managing use of devices and setting effective guidelines to keep children safe, healthy and connected, event organizers say.

Erlacher specializes in providing training and consulting on team effectiveness and inter-generational leadership. She founded Leading Tomorrow in 2014 with the aim of equipping churches, businesses, schools, missions agencies and other organizations for effective inter-generational leadership in an evolving culture.

Free dinner at Trinity United

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The meal includes ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables, green salad, dessert and beverages.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling the church at 360-683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by email to dinnerstumc@aol.com.

The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

Clinic walk, health fair set for Sept. 14

The Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic-The Sequim Free Clinic hosts its 15th-annual Fun Walk at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave.

This event is free to all; donations are very welcome, but not required. All proceeds from the walk go to the Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic, Sequim’s free clinic

The event features 5-kilometer and 1-mile courses. Registration opens at 8 a.m. for individuals, families and teams who choose to walk or run through Carrie Blake Community Park, the Water Reuse Demonstration Site and a part of the Olympic Discovery Trail. All pets must be leashed on the walk.

Stay after the walk for a health fair that includes screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar and oxygen saturation, plus a variety of health and wellness information and services.

Organizations sought for ‘Things to Do’

Clubs and not-for-profit organizations seeking members, volunteers or participants are encouraged to participate in the fifth-annual “Things To Do In Sequim” event, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.

The event brings groups together with people interested in learning more about the community and various opportunities to serve and participate in activities. The grange will provide, at no cost, a table for each participating group to display information and tell their stories. The public is likewise invited to come and learn about the various opportunities to be part of these organizations and activities, in and around Sequim. About 40 tables are available inside; and there is also space available on the grange grounds.

Republican group to host ‘Proud to be American’ event

The Republican Women of Clallam County, in conjunction with the Clallam County Republican Party, host “Proud to be an American,” a special event set for 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.

There is no fee; donations are accepted.

The event features former Sequim resident Jonathan Hay, a Hollywood producer and director, as well as former Sequim resident Hannah Fritz, newly-appointed special assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Labor. It also features solos performed by Melannie Jackson (“Proud to be an American”) and Ashleigh Victoria (“God Bless America”).

Tina Podlodowski, Chair of the Washington State Democratic Party Chair since 2017 and Vice Chair of the Western Caucus – Democratic National Committee, is the keynote speaker at the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 7 Cedars Casino’s Club Seven, 270756 US Highway 101, Blyn.

The event, the Clallam County Democrats’ 2019 annual fundraiser, includes State Rep. Mike Chapman as Master of Ceremonies, with U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer offering closing remarks.
