Historical society’s garage sale around the corner

The Clallam County Historical Society’s garage sale, held at the Lincoln School site on the corner of Eighth and C Streets in Port Angeles, begins with Members Only night from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23. Memberships may be purchased up to the opening of the afternoon’s event. Dues are $25 for senior citizen, $30 for an individual and $35 for a family.

Regular sale days are 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 24-25. Half-price day is Friday, Aug. 31, and Buck-a-Bag day is Saturday, Sept. 1; hours for the second weekend are also 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

All proceeds from the sale benefit the society’s mission to preserve and share local history.

Car wash, bake sale to help exchange program

A car wash and bake sale to help students in the Sequim/Shiso city exchange program is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at the JCPenney parking lot at 651 W. Washington St. Cost is by donation.

Ten Sequim Students have been selected through process of an application, teacher recommendations and an interview to participate in a nine-day exchange program though the Sequim/Shiso city exchange program. Money collected from the fundraiser go to defray their travel costs.

‘Work to Learn’ party set

Mary Crook demonstrates how to make attractive flower arrangements during the “Work to Learn” Party set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Sequim Botanical Garden in Carrie Blake Community Park, just north of the James Center For The Performing Arts band shell at 350 N. Blake Ave.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a vase and clippers to use the gardens’ dahlias and roses as the core of cut flower bouquets. Extra foliage, water and clippers will be provided. Afterward, learn to identify and deadhead (cut off) the past-peak blooms in the Terrace Garden.

Crook has been a volunteer with the Sequim Botanical Garden Society for about three years and a gardener since moving to Sequim in 1978. The Sequim Botanical Garden Society is a volunteer partner with the City of Sequim and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Open house scheduled at research center

The County Genealogy Society hosts an open house from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at the organization’s Research Center, 402 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. “I Know Nothing About Genealogy,” a beginner’s class, will be given at 1 p.m. For more advance researchers, a “brick wall” session starts at 12:30 p.m.

The community is invited to look over the facilities, enjoy refreshments, take a class or do their research using databases, computers, books, etc. Volunteers are available to assist.

There is no cost to use the center, but donations are welcome.

Registration open now for 2018 Womanfest event

Registration is now open for Womanfest’s fall retreat set for Friday afternoon, Sept. 21 through Sunday afternoon, Sept. 23.

The retreat, held annually for 35 years at Camp David Jr. — the Clallam County park on the north shore of Lake Crescent — includes meals cooked in the lakeside lodge, crafts, walks on nearby trails, swimming, canoeing and other relaxing activities the women choose.

Free dinner slated at Trinity United Methodist Church

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The meal includes baked ham, beans, vegetables, green salad, dessert and beverages.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling the church at 360-683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner, or by email to dinnerstumc@aol.com.

The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

ONF announces salal permit sale dates

Permit sales for salal on the Olympic National Forest will begin in September. Permits for salal — an understory shrub commonly used in the floral industry that grows in dense thickets throughout western Washington and Oregon — Permits will be issued from the Forks, Quinault and Quilcene offices during business hours on the following dates: Sept. 5, Nov. 7, Jan. 9 and March 13.

A total of 100 permits will be issued. A lottery system will be used if the demand for permits exceeds the supply. Each permit will cost $150 and can be used for up to two months.

Organizations sought for ‘Things to Do in Sequim’

Local clubs or not-for-profit organization seeking members, volunteers or participants are encouraged to participate in the third-annual “Things to Do in Sequim” event, scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.

The event bring groups together with people interested in learning more about the community and the various opportunities to serve. The grange will provide, at no cost, a table for each participating group. The public will be invited to come and learn about the various opportunities to be part of these organizations and activities, in and around Sequim. The 2018 Mad Hatters Tea, a luncheon fundraiser to support breast cancer research, is set for 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Sequim Ave. Tickets are on sale now and are $35; reserve a seat by Sept. 25. Guest speakers are Dr. Lorraine Lovejoy-Evans and Vonnie Putnam. Day of Caring is Sept. 10

In honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance, United Way hosts a Day of Caring from 8 a.m.-noon on Monday, Sept. 10, at Carrie Blake Community Park. United Way volunteer will be helping remove brush and spread bark at the park. Volunteers are asked to come prepared with work clothes and gloves; snacks and water will be provided.
