Donate socks, undies

Clallam County Homeless Connect is asking local congregations to have a “Socks and Undies Sunday,” on Feb. 12 as a Valentine gift to people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. PFOA hosts workshop

Peninsula Friends of Animals, 257509 US Highway 101, Port Angeles, is hosting an Emotion Code Workshop at Safehaven facilitated by certified practitioner Candance Hall at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Clallam County commission talks zoning changes

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes a public hearing regarding proposed amendments to the Title 33 zoning code; changes would amend vacation rental standards, the definition of bed and breakfast inns, commercial storage and a new definition of bedroom units. Landscape issues answered

Free classes on landscaping problems will be at the Sequim Prairie Garden Club on Mondays from 7-10 p.m. starting Feb. 13. The classes will cover a very broad agenda from beginning a yard, basic “Northwest landscape,” why and how to install sprinklers, deer proofing, basic right plant-right location, living with the low water use yard, water gardens and year-round color. The program will include video, slideshows, hand-outs and a personal landscape design of your yard. The presenter is Doug Cockburn, CHP, president of Landscapes by Cockburn, who has over 43 years of landscaping and nursery experience in Clallam and Jefferson counties. Walk aerobics at church

County HHS moves

The Clallam County Health and Human Services Department is relocating to 111 E. Third St., Port Angeles. The two-story building directly north of the Safeway Grocery store on Third Street already houses the Health and Human Services’ Public Health programs on the first floor. The Health and Human Services Department’s administrative staff, the Chemical Dependency/Mental Health, Homelessness, and Developmental Disabilities programs as well as the Environmental Health Division’s Food Protection, Water Quality and Solid Waste program staff will now occupy the second floor of the building. The move is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Hospital thrift shop open

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. The shop is bursting with new items including furniture and accessories, paintings, clothing for everyone, scarves, designer handbags, jewelry, kitchen appliances and dishes and much more.

All proceeds from sales go back to the medical community of Sequim. Consignors and volunteers always are needed. Call 683-7044 for information.

Dementia prevention talk set

Dr. Carolyn DeSalvo will present a free WOW! Working on Wellness Forum entitled “Prevention of Dementia: an Integrative Approach” at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., in Sequim.

DeSalvo is a physician with more than 25 years experience. She will teach attendees about changes to keep their minds sharp and their bodies strong as they age.

WOW! Working on Wellness is a health education program of Dungeness Valley Health &Wellness Clinic. The Basic Urgent Care Clinic is open to patients at 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.

Get the buzz on mason bees

Wild Birds Unlimited, 275953 U.S. Highway 101, Gardiner, invites the public to one of two presentations on the orchard mason bee. The first class will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, and the second class will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. Christie Lassen will be giving an hour-long, family friendly talk on the benefits of mason bees and how to attract them and keep them in your garden. A contribution of $5 to the store’s Community Education Fund holds a seat for you at this presentation and proceeds from the talk go to the Northwest Raptor &Wildlife Center and Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue.

Caregivers classes slated

Another series of classes of “Powerful Tools for the Caregiver” will be from 1:30-4 p.m. weekly, on Wednesdays, beginning March 1-April 5 at the Latter-day Saints Church, 815 W. Washington St., Sequim. If there are enough enrollees, a second class will be added from 9:30 a.m.-noon. The classes are intended for family caregivers, to teach them self-care practices so they can better serve their loved one while maintaining their own well-being. Attendance at all six classes is recommended. Classes are presented for free, but a book is required at a cost of $32. Registration and book payment is required by Feb. 22 and can be done by contacting Wanda Bean at 919-616-0302.

Hughes to recount tragic ONP crash at ‘Tales’

Retired Olympic National Park Ranger Jack Hughes will talk about one of his most difficult rescue experiences at the Clallam County Historical Society’s History Tales presentation at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at the First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles.

The program will be held in the social hall; parking and entry are on Laurel Street.

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
