Get the lowdown on pests

“Emerging Pests” will be presented by Master Gardener Bob Cain at noon, Thursday, May 11, at the county commissioners meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The presentation is part of the Green Thumb Garden Tips education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

OPA hosts spaghetti feed

Olympic Peninsula Academy PTO will be holding spaghetti feed fundraiser from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave. The cost is $10/adult, $5 for children ages 5-16 years old, under 5 free. Maximum cost per family is $30. This is an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner with garlic bread and salad. There will be vegetarian and gluten free options.

Book sale is Saturday

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This month’s new items include a selection of military, World War II, European history and Holocaust literature and memoirs. Also featured will be sheet music, how to and history of piano, violin, guitar and harmonica music. There are more cookbooks, including five “KCTS 9 Cooks,” a new batch on quilting books and a big collection of music CDs.

Boating safety class offered

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer the “About Boating Safety” class from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Coast Guard Station at Ediz Hook. This class meets both state and federal boating requirements. Upon completion of the class, boaters will be issued a lifetime card. Use directories for research

On Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m.-noon, Andrea Betts will present a class on how to use city directories in your genealogical research at the Clallam County Transit Center Administration Building, 830 W. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

City directories can answer a variety of questions including residence, employment, who was living with whom, etc. Come and learn how to fully utilize these valuable and very interesting resources.

‘Sounds of Spring’ explored

“Backyard Birding” continues from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 13, with “Sounds of Spring,” the eighth session. Meet at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. Olympic Peninsula Audubon leaders Ken Wiersema and Dow Lambert will present a slide, video and sound program about recognizing your neighborhood birds by their songs and their calls.

The program will feature recent recordings of local birds. “Backyard Birding” can be taken either as individual classes or in a series. Each session is $5 and is free for anyone under 18. After the completion of five sessions, participants will be offered free membership in OPAS for one year.

View historical police exhibit

An exhibit of historical Sequim Police Department memorabilia is on display in the lobby of the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St., through May in honor of National Police Week, May 14-20. The exhibit includes uniforms, badges and patches worn by Sequim Police officers through the years and serves as a timeline of significant events in the department.

Murrelet is topic of talk

Find out how the future of the Olympic Peninsula is tied to the fate of the Marbled Murrelet. Maria Mudd Ruth, author of “Rare Bird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet,” will speak at Save The Olympic Peninsula’s regular meeting on Monday, May 15, in the Carver Room at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Take a tour of Sequim’s renovated Guy Cole Center

Join the City of Sequim for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon Tuesday, May 16, to celebrate the Phase I completion of the Guy Cole Center renovation project at Carrie Blake Community Park. The ceremony will include information on the completed first phase of renovation, tours of the facility and information on the next phase of renovation.

Open house planned in park

The Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim, will have an open house from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, May 20. There will be children’s activities, park tours, summer camp registration and opportunities to learn more about ways you can get involved at the center.

Bird tales abound

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.

The presentation will be given by Ingrid Nixon, a world-traveling storyteller. Her program features stories about birds in legend and folklore. A masterful storyteller, Nixon brings characters to life using voices and gestures. Her stories will make you look at birds in your life with new eyes. The program is free and open to the public.

Manage your affairs

Soroptimist International of Sequim announces its second presentation in its series Tea with SHE. Teresa Neudorfer, elder law attorney, will share with attendees on how to “Get Your Affairs in Order.” Neudorfer will address the issues seniors need to consider as they age and the paperwork to make that happen. Tea with SHE will be from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim. No reservations are required.

New in town?

If you are new to Sequim or considering relocating to Sequim, the “New in Town Conversation” gathering has been designed for you.

Meet other newcomers, learn more about the history of Sequim, volunteering opportunities and about how to handle the stresses and strains of relocation.

The events are from 2:30-4:30 p.m. each third Wednesday every other month at First Federal, 333 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim. RSVP to Catherine Mich at 582-1081 or cjmich@gmail.com. The next gathering is May 17.

Shelter Providers to meet

The Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, in Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The Network and the county’s advisory Homelessness Task Force are developing goals and strategies to end homelessness and preparing for the June 21 Annual Forum on Homelessness in Clallam County. Sign-in begins at 9:45 a.m.

Have coffee with mayor

The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in May. Sequim residents can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill, 707 E. Washington St. Assistant City Manager Joe Irvin will join the mayor for the meeting.

The mayor will be at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Olympic Medical Cancer Center will offer several free cancer support groups this month.

• May 23, 1-3 p.m. Women’s Cancer Support Group meets at the OMCC library, 844 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
