Auditor calls special canvassing meeting

The Clallam County Canvassing Board will hold a special canvassing meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, on the basement level of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. This open public meeting is being held to address potential voter fraud in the 2016 General Election. The Clallam County Canvassing Board is comprised of County Auditor Shoona Riggs, Prosecuting Attorney Mark Nichols and Board of County Commissioners Chair Mark Ozias, all elected officials.

OPAS speaker to talk birding in Texas

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road. Carolyn Wilcox, owner and operator of Port Angeles-based ExperienceOlympic Nature Tours, is the guest speaker. She’ll talk about bird-watching in Texas in winter months. She tells her stories and shows photos of birds she viewed while traveling through the Lone Star state. The program is free and open to the public. Call 360-681-4076 for more information.

Saving turtles is topic at Studium Generale

Scientist Eric Munscher presents a lecture on the plight of turtles worldwide and the efforts of his organization to save species on the verge of extinction at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, at Studium Generale, in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. Munscher serves as a regional scientist with SWCA Environmental Consultants in their Houston, Texas office. He is a former student of Peninsula College biology professor J. Brian Hauge, and studied tropical ecology and turtle population ecology with Hauge from 2000-2004 when they were both at Penn State University.

Fly fishers to meet

The next meeting of the Sequim Greywolf Fly Fishers is 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road. Following a brief business meeting, members will give fishing reports on local lakes and favorite flies that successfully catch fish. The remainder of meeting is reserved for individual fly-tying. Attendees may observe or tie a fly of their choice (bring your fly-tying equipment and materials). There also will be a fly raffle and discussion about recent adventures. Clallam Transit offers deal for 37th

Clallam Transit officials are inviting community members to take advantage of a deal as the organization celebrates its 37th year in service on Oct. 13. Fixed-route customers who pay for a single ride fare on Oct. 13 will receive a Clallam Transit Service two-day pass valid through Oct. 14 on fixed routes 10-52. Have coffee with deputy mayor

The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in October. City attorney Kristina Nelson-Gross joins Deputy Mayor Ted Miller at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Oak Table Café, 292 W. Washington St. The Mayor or a representative will be at a published location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern, or make a comment about the City of Sequim or the community.

Family scavenger hunt, events on tap

Olympic Nature Experience hosts a Fall Family Scavenger Hunt set for 1-3:30 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2741 Towne Road, Sequim. Along with the scavenger hunt, the event features storytelling, snacks and bake sale. Cost is $15 per family or $5 per person. All proceeds benefit the Olympic Nature Experience.

Library sale set

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. This month’s special featured items include an extensive selection of more than 130 watercolor painting instruction books in excellent condition, large format collector car and motorcycle books including many repair and restoration manuals, various science fiction and mystery clearance books (outside the annex), a small collection of doll and teddy bear books and more than 70 jig-saw puzzles from 50 to 1,000 pieces. Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programming at the Sequim Library.

Sequim birding series continues on Oct. 21

“Landscaping for Birds,” the first in the series of eight classes on Backyard Birding, is from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park. Joe Holtrop, Executive Director of the Clallam Conservation District, presents aspects of a bird-friendly yard including food, water and shelter, with emphasis on the use of plants native to this area. The series of classes, hosted by members of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, is intended for local residents interested in knowing more about our area’s birds and how to develop good habitats for wild birds.

“Backyard Birding” can be taken either as individual classes or in a series. Cost of each session is $5 and is free for anyone younger than 18. After completion of five sessions, participants are offered free membership in OPAS for one year.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 360-683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Thursday, Oct. 12: Spinach salad with a boiled egg, turkey pot pie, asparagus tips, oatmeal cookie, apricots.

Friday, Oct. 13: tomato juice, biscuits with country gravy, scrambled eggs, fruit cup, chocolate cream pie.

Tuesday, Oct. 17: Sliced tomatoes, salisbury steak mashed potatoes, steamed peas, fruit crisp.

Wednesday, Oct. 18: Tossed salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, cauliflower, garlic bread.
