Friends of Library sale is Saturday

The Friends of Sequim Library hosts the group’s monthly book sale from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The sale features a complete, 12-volume set of “Diary of A Wimpy Kid.” Also available are books about dinosaurs and dragons, as well as multiple graphic novels, manga and cartoon books. Woodworking books include projects, plans, tool use and how to carve totem poles. There is also a 28-volume set of Combat & Survival. Also offered is a very large collection of sheet music, both popular and classical.

Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programs at the Sequim Library.

State lifts ban on commercial shellfish

The Washington State Department of Health announced last week that portions of commercial shellfish areas around 20 Puget Sound marinas would no longer be classified as prohibited, including 67 acres around Sequim’s John Wayne Marina.

Improved sewage management has allowed state officials to remove shellfish harvest restrictions on nearly 700 acres of commercial shellfish beds throughout the state.

The reclassified areas also include 144 acres in Jefferson County, at Cape George, Fisherman Harbor, Pleasant Harbor, Port Hudson, Port Townsend and Quilcene marinas.

Clallam Mosaic monthly dance set for Sept. 8

Clallam Mosaic, a local nonprofit that works to empower people with special needs, will be hosting their monthly dance from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles.

The door charge is $7; accompanying caregivers attend for free.

On the menu are shredded chicken tacos, Tex-Mex bean salad, Mexican style salsa salad, sugarless cookies and Mexican almond cake. Coffee, tea and water are available.

The community is invited to enjoy music, dancing and friendship.

The next dance is scheduled for Oct. 13, and promises to be a “haunting good time,” organizers say.

Garden club hosts speaker Garthwaite

Sequim Prairie Garden Club welcomes guests to hear guest speaker Eleanor Garthwaite at their next meeting set for 10:30-11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the Pioneer Memorial Park clubhouse, 387 E. Washington St. Not only a favorite among local gardening gurus, Garthwaite is also “a natural wit,” event organizers say. The community is invited to some hearty chuckles as Garthwaite presents her own special viewpoint on retirement living: “Life in the Fast Lane.”

Parent to Parent coffee, conversation on tap

The Clallam Parent to Parent support group for families providing care to an individual with special needs will be meeting on Tuesdays throughout the fall.

Their first meeting will be from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Common Grounds Cafe, 525 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

Community members are welcome to enjoy some downtime with other parents who understand challenges of parenting a child with special needs. Find emotional support, laughter, resource sharing and a safe place to talk. No reservation are needed.

Grange sets flea market; tables available

The Sequim Prairie Grange hosts a flea market from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at 290 Macleay Road. There will be food served in the grange kitchen starting at 10 a.m. Tables are available for $15 each. Train history presentation set

Steve Haupt leads a presentation about local train history at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2741 Towne Road. A Port Angeles resident, Haupt seeks to bring alive the old memories of the past when trains were an important to the economy and industry on the Olympic Peninsula. Donations are being accepted for schoolhouse maintenance. Attendees are urged to come early, as seating is limited.

At its general meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 12, the Sequim Bay Yacht Club hosts guest speaker Mike Payne, who will talk about the mission and recent accomplishments of the Port Townsend Aero Museum.

The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the large meeting room at John Wayne Marina, 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road.

The present museum facility opened 10 years ago and is a nonprofit, publicly owned, education-based operation specializing in the restoration of old aircraft, mainly of tube and fabric construction. The museum has a collection of 23 aircraft dating from 1926-1958. A large part of its work is the mentoring of aviation-minded teenagers from Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties. Students learn aircraft restoration skills as well as pilot training.

Veteran’s Benefits Seminar, slated Sept. 15

Organizers of a veteran’s benefits seminar hope to help veterans, spouses of veterans and surviving spouses of veterans know what benefits are available to them to enhance their lives with a free event set for 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the American Legion Hall, 107 E. Prairie St., Sequim.

Veteran service officers from the American Legion will discussing a number of the benefits that are available — how they work, how to apply for them and more. A question-and-answer period will follow the discussion.

Refreshments will be provided.

Master Gardeners putting on a Fall Festival

Clallam County Master Gardeners host a Fall Festival from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road.

This free event features speakers, information tables and activities for children. Speakers include: Megan Davis, Clallam County Waste Reduction Coordinator, with Jim Lewis and Al Cairo, presenting a composting overview at 10 a.m.; Elaine Webber, talking about mulches at 11 a.m.; Jeanette Stehr-Green, presenting “Fall and Winter Chores in the Berry Patch” at noon, and Bob Cain, presenting “Fall and Winter Vegetable Gardening” at 1 p.m. Youth activities include root viewers, rock painting and Herbie the Plant Seed, while information tables provide more about tools, simple-drip irrigation, mason bees and composting.

Olympic View Church of God and The Crossing Church are partnering to provide a garage sale event to the community set for 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at 503 N. Brown Road. Scholarships available

Clallam Promise Scholarships are available for qualified students attending Peninsula College in 2018-19. These need-based scholarships are available to full-time students who have graduated from a Clallam County high school within the past year. They provide up to $1,000 per quarter for tuition and fees, and up to $300 for textbooks, as well as up to $500 for tools and supplies.

Funds are provided on a first-come, first-served basis to students with identified unmet need. Students must complete the FAFSA and financial aid file with Peninsula College, and can begin the application process at www.pencol.edu/getstarted.

The Clallam Promise Scholarship at Peninsula College is funded primarily by the Albert Haller Foundation, with support from the Joyce Community Scholarship and Education Foundation and the Ben & Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust.
