Drug take-back day set for April 28

Local law enforcement entities are teaming up to help get rid of potentially dangerous unused drugs throughout the Sequim and Port Angeles communities.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Sequim Police Department and Port Angeles Department are taking part in Nationwide Prescription Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 28.

Sponsored by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the event allows individuals to drop off potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Sequim Police Department, 152 W. Cedar St., or the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Drugs may also be dropped off at the Sequim Police Department anytime during regular office hours Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., or at the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office during regular business hours, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (except holidays).

The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked; individuals will not be asked for their identification.

The collection service in Sequim will include both controlled and non-controlled prescription drugs as well as over-the-counter medications. The Sequim Police Department will also now accept illegal drugs for destruction. Syringes and medical waste will not be accepted, however.

Prescription drug abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in America, according to local law enforcement agencies. Individuals are reminded that you should never flush prescription drugs down the toilet or sink drain unless the label or accompanying patient information specifically instructs you to do so. Drugs that are flushed down the drain or put in garbage containers can be very harmful to humans, animals and the environment.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office notes that unused, expired, and unneeded medicines can be a serious danger to those living in the residence, especially for young children and pets. Such drugs and medications can be stolen, misused and abused by others.
