Learn about bluffs, beaches with 2019 Beach Naturalist course

The 2019 Beach Naturalist course offered by Jefferson WSU Extension highlights marine habitats, coastal geology, intertidal species and broader issues such as ocean acidification and hazardous algae blooms.

This year’s six-week class is offered on Thursdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., March 21-April 25. Based at the WSU Extension classroom in Port Hadlock, the series includes field trips to both Jefferson and Clallam County shorelines.

Lecture topics include nearshore habitats, coastal geology, seaweeds and habitat restoration. It’s designed for anyone interested in shoreline and marine resources.

This year’s guest speakers include experts from Washington State Dept. of Ecology, Washington Sea Grant, Jamestown S’Klallam resource managers, WSU Extension and more. Field trips include Sequim Bay, Marrowstone Island, Port Townsend Marine Science Center and Elwha River nearshore.

Participants are asked to volunteer 40 hours for local conservation organizations, participating in activities such as salmon and forage fish monitoring, public outreach, and restoring habitat.

Cost is $150. Scholarships are available. Applications are being accepted through March 14.
