Sequim man arrested for reckless burning

Sequim Police Department announced on July 30 that law enforcement arrested a Sequim man for alleged reckless burning among other charges.

In a press release, Sequim Police Department said local resident Michael Heller was booked into Clallam County Corrections Facility on July 29 for the alleged charges of reckless burning second degree, three counts of assault third degree and resisting arrest.

According to the release, Sequim Police officers responded to a call for assistance for Clallam County Fire District No. 3 in the 400 block of South Brown Road in Sequim, where fire district responders were extinguishing several small fires in the field south of that location.

Responders saw a suspicious subject in the area and believed him to be responsible for starting the fires, the release said.

Law enforcement said the subject attempted to leave the area and hid from law enforcement behind a storage container to the south of the Shipley Center on East Hammond Street and was arrested for reckless burning.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Department deputies also were called to assist searching for the subject.

During the arrest, three Sequim Police officers were assaulted by Heller but neither Heller nor the officers sustained injury during the incident.
