Soils workshop for farmers set in Sequim

WSU Extension’s Regional Small Farms Program is hosting a workshop for farmers titled “Advanced Soils and Cover Crops: Optimizing Nitrogen Management on Organic and Biologically Intensive Vegetable Farms.” Homesteaders and gardeners are welcome to attend as well.

This workshop is happening in two locations: 9-1:30 a.m. Tuesday May 8, at the barn behind Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, Sequim, and from 2:30-5 p.m. in WSU classroom at WSU Kitsap County Extension in Bremerton.

All are welcome to attend. WSU soil scientist Doug Collins will cover basics of soil chemistry and fertility, and demonstrate research on quick nitrate testing. Participants are encouraged to bring their latest soil test results and to come with site-specific questions. Participants are encouraged to bring 2-3 cups of soil if they would like to participate in the lab demonstration of instant nitrate testing. Nitrate test strips provided for each participants.

Cost of the workshop is $15 per farm, up to two people per farm. Pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, visit soilsandnitrogen.bpt.me. Or, contact Regional Small Farms Coordinator Kellie Henwood kellie.henwood@wsu.edu or 360-379-5610 ext. 201.
