The Elwha’s Evolution

The Elwha nearshore continues to evolve two and a half years after the nation’s largest dam removal project concluded. Since the project began, the sediment-starved estuary and shoreline have grown by approximately 80 acres, providing new and critical habitat for growing numbers of salmon, forage fish and birds. The restoration response is anticipated to continue for approximately five years after dam removal. The Coastal Watershed Institute and collaborators continue long-term studies to understand and promote the nearshore ecosystem restoration of the Elwha system.
