William Shepard

A service for Sequim resident William Shepard will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 5 at Sequim View Cemetery, 1305 Sequim-Dungeness Way.

Mr. Shepard died Nov. 26, 2008, at the age of 72 of lung disease and an enlarged heart.

He was born Sept. 14, 1936, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Eugene and Mahalia Rebecca Sisk Shepard.

He married Grace Mae Peters on June 15, 1958, in Bonita, Calif. He served in the United States Marines as a staff sergeant. Mr. Shepard was an engineering release analyst for Rohr Aircraft and owner/operator for Allied Van Lines in Escondido, Calif. He enjoyed politics, football, talk radio, playing pinochle and talking with good friend Doug Swarz. He was a member of Rotary in Escondido.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Mae Shepard of Sequim; daughters and sons-in-law Sharilyn Kay and Joe Catone of Temecula, Calif., and Jayna Marie and Kevin Wood of Sequim; brothers and sister-in-law Bob Shepard of San Diego, Calif., and Jack and Jeannine Shepard of St. Joseph, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Don 'Sarge' Salonen

A memorial service for former

Sequim resident Don "Sarge" Salonen will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 169 E. Washington St., Sequim. Mr. Salonen died Nov. 21, 2008, at the age of 86. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Jim Bekkevar of the Masonic Lodge will preside.

Mr. Salonen was born March 8, 1922, in Redby, Minn., to Axel and Irene Rouseau Salonen. He married Ruth Radke on Feb. 17, 1945, in Everett.

A Purple Heart recipient, he served in the Coast Guard from 1939-1945 and at Pearl Harbor in the South Pacific.

Mr. Salonen lived in Sequim for 61 years, where he was chief of police and a city councilman. He also was a miner, logger, millworker, fireman, school employee and a security guard at Battelle. An Explorer Scout leader, he was a member of the Catholic Church, Footprinters, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cootie Coast Guard, Masonic Lodge,

Sequim Prairie Grange, and Retired Police and Firefighters Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Salonen of Mount Vernon; daughters Cheryl Koops of Sedro-Woolley and Sheri Easley of Mount Vernon; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Jeff J. Viets

A celebration of life for Sequim resident Jeff J. Viets will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 6 in the forest he loved at his Sequim home. The Rev. Lynn Osborne will preside. Mr. Viets died Nov. 15, 2008, at the age of 65 following a stroke.

He was born Dec. 28, 1942, in California.

After 40 years as a systems engineer for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company with the elite Skunkworks Team, he retired to the North Olympic Peninsula in 2005. He married Kathleen Hennen on Oct. 13, 2008, in Santa Fe, N.M.

He loved the outdoors, was an active hiker and a member of the Audubon Society. He sang with barbershop groups, participated in square dances, was a gourmet cook and studied cake decorating. He was a model train enthusiast and an avid gardener who loved flowers. His love for the arts, including music and theater, led to his meeting his wife, Kathleen, when she was performing in a local production in 2006.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Viets; son Byron Viets of Fresno, Calif.; daughters Leslie Ann Viets and Wendy Ziska, both of Denver, Colo.; sister Valerie Viets of Burbank, Calif.; brothers David Viets of Clovis, Calif., and Brad Viets of Boise, Idaho; and two grandchildren.



Chad Martin Stanislaw

A service has been held for Carlsborg resident Chad Martin Stanislaw, who died Nov. 23, 2008, at the age of 40.

He was born Sept. 5, 1968, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Peter Paul and Norma Jean Thomsen Stanislaw.

He attended schools in Port Angeles and earned his graduation equivalent diploma, then attended one year of college in Port Angeles and Montana.

He worked as a wood puller in mills, as a fish processor and also at a local tree farm. Mr. Stanislaw lived in Colorado, Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon and Utah. He also worked for Department of Natural Resources making trails and campgrounds.

Very nomadic, he loved hiking, fishing, hunting, playing board games, making drums and rattles for family, spending time with friends and family, and spending time at the sweat lodge. At one point, he hitchhiked from Washington to Iowa.

He was known for his sense of humor and caring nature. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe of Montana.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather Norma and Richard Michels of Carlsborg; sister Tami Jo Tait of Sun River, Ore.; a nephew and a niece.

Memorial gifts may be made to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County.

Harold Clifford Johnson

At his request, no service is planned for Sequim resident Harold Clifford Johnson, who died Oct. 30, 2008, at the age of 85 of congestive heart failure.

He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Sequim to Wilson and Ethel Wood Johnson.

He married Hannah "Dick" Johnson on March 19, 1949. She preceded him in death on April 24, 2006.

Mr. Johnson was a dairy farmer and millworker. A Jamestown S'Klallam elder, he lived in Jamestown all his life. He enjoyed watching football and boxing. He also loved being with family and his dog Hoku.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Steven and Megan Johnson and Terry and Sherry Johnson, all of Sequim; daughters Vickie Carroll, Sandra Johnson, Verna Johnson and Susan Johnson, all of Sequim; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Joseph 'Joe' Twiss

No service was reported for Sequim resident Joseph "Joe" Twiss, who died Nov. 25, 2008, at the age of 87.

He was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Rosedale, W. Va., to Joseph Claude and Edith Ferguson Twiss. He married Rosemary Walker on June 6, 1947, in Falconer, N.Y.

He was a chief quartermaster in the U.S. Navy for 26 years, serving during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War on submarines, minesweepers and battleships. He and his family lived in West Virginia, South Carolina and Sequim, among other places. He loved sports, including baseball and football, and liked to coach youth baseball and soccer. He was a substitute teacher for 10 years at Stratford High School in Goosecreek, S.C.

He also liked to bowl and repair things and helped raise all of his grandchildren.

He was a member of Fleet Reserve Association.

He is survived by his son Craig Twiss of Port Angeles; daughter Terry Walraven of Sequim; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Cynthia Wofford in 1994.

Raymond Donner

A service will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Raymond Donner, who died Nov. 26, 2008, at the age of 82 of congestive heart failure.

He was born July 22, 1926, in Sandpoint, Idaho, to The Rev. Herman and Verna Chipman Donner.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a radarman second class during World War II aboard the USS Crockett from 1944-46 in the South Pacific.

He married Melissa Nash on Sept. 27, 1946, in Corvallis, Ore.

Mr. Donner was a flight line mechanic with Air Transport Associates in Seattle.

He worked for Boeing Company in flight test as a flight line mechanic supervisor for 34 years. He moved from Kent to Sequim in March 1989. He loved flying, fishing, boating and bicycling - bicycling in France in 1983 and the Netherlands in 1985. He most enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Donner is survived by his wife of 62 years, Melissa Donner; daughter Catherine Lambe of Covington; son Christofer Donner of Kent; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
