Robert Leeds Macomber Jr.

A memorial service for Sequim resident Robert Leeds Macomber Jr. will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Mr. Macomber died Feb. 9, 2010, at the age of 82.

He was born May 26, 1927, in Springfield, Mass., to Jessie Nichols and Robert Macomber Sr.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and married Jerry Anne Griffith in June 1951.

Mr. Macomber graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He worked at Western Electric Co., now Lucent, for more than 28 years. He owned and operated clock shops as a master clockmaker as a second career in Prescott, Ariz.

He was a deacon in Central Presbyterian Church, an active member of Montclair Volunteer Ambulance Unit and assistant leader of Boy Scouts of America Troop 7 of Upper Montclair Presbyterian Church. As a gift to Prescott, Ariz., he restored the Yavapai County Courthouse town clocks.

He moved to Sequim at the age of 76. He and his wife enjoyed recreational vehicle travel throughout the years. They built a log home in Blyn and there lived for nine years before health issues brought them into Sequim.

He is survived by his wife, Jerry Macomber of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law Robert III and Debra Macomber of Canfield, Ohio, and Arthur and Leslie Macomber of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; daughters and sons-in-law Abigail and Julien Berg of Blyn; Marcia-Katherine and Evan Millman of Port Townsend; and Polly Macomber of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

Richard Jensen

No services were reported for Sequim resident Richard Jensen, who died Feb. 18, 2010, at the age of 85.

He was born March 16, 1924, in the Bronx, N.Y., to George and Edith Henry Jensen.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and married Louise Koubsky on Sept. 29, 1944.

He belonged to Mount Kisco Masonic Lodge in New York and to the American Legion.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Joyce and Craig Paulson of Sequim; and Laura and Brian Frable of Palmdale, Calif.; sister Nancy Seiberg of North Carolina; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.



Frederick Ryan

A service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim, for Port Angeles resident Frederick Ryan.

Mr. Ryan died Feb. 11, 2010, at 81, of cancer.

He was born April 9, 1928, in Fitchburg, Mass., to Frederick and Frances Leware Ryan.

He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II from 1944-1945. He also served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1960. He married June Ann Solynm on March 3, 1954, in Vista, Calif.

He was a businessman in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, California, Ohio and Washington.

A co-owner of Northwest Interior Design Flooring Store, he was an avid golfer at Dungeness Golf Course, a member of Sequim Community Church and a small group member there.

He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6787 and Elks Lodge 2642.

He was a past president of San Diego Realty Board in California.

He is survived by his wife, June Ryan; son and daughter-in-law Sean and Sheila Ryan; sisters Frances Goss and Nancy Viggiano, both of Fitchburg; and three grandchildren.



Edward Lloyd Bland

A private service will be held for Sequim resident Edward Lloyd Bland, who died Feb. 13, 2010, at the age of 77.

He was born May 22, 1932, in Aberdeen to William and Ethel Jones Bland.

He served in the United States Army for three years and married Mary Schenck on Jan. 6, 1957.

Mr. Bland was an engineer at Boeing and had lived in Coronado, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Bland of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law Eric and Melissa Daimler of San Francisco, Calif., and New York; and Bill and Sarita Bland of San Diego, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Cindy and John Corrigan of Auburn and Debbie and Mike Sandona of Republic; sister and brother-in-law Carroll and Bernard Barber of Montesano; and seven grandchildren.

Alton H. DuFlon

A celebration of life will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Alton H. DuFlon.

Mr. DuFlon died Dec. 29, 2009, at the age of 92.

He was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., and grew up in Ridgefield, N.J.

As a boy, he was an award-winning model airplane designer. He graduated with honors in engineering from Cooper Union College in New York. He married Bita Mairer in 1942. The couple moved from New Jersey in 1951 with their two daughters.

Mr. DuFlon was an avid mountain climber and backpacker and a member of The Mountaineers in Seattle. For many years, he was a climbing leader. He climbed the major Northwest peaks and many lesser ones. He took his family on camping and backpacking trips all over the West. He was seldom

without his camera.

After spending most of his career in the aerospace industry for North American-Rockwell and Boeing, he became a successful real estate agent for John L. Scott in Seattle.

The DuFlons moved to Sequim in 1986.

They spent several years restoring the McAlmond house, which is on the National Historic Register. They also landscaped the grounds themselves.

He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law Laurel and Paul Solie, of Sequim, and Andrea DuFlon of Berkeley, Calif.; and a granddaughter.



Andrew Forrest Ward

No service was reported for Sequim resident Andrew Forrest Ward, who died Jan. 25, 2010, at the age of 92.

He was born Jan. 27, 1917, in Weiser, Idaho, to Claude and

Nellie Forrest Ward. The family, which included a sister, Margaret, later settled in Talent, Ore., where Forrest, as he was known to his family, graduated from Medford High School.

In 1942, at age 25, he joined the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served as a tail gunner on a B-29 crew and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. In March 1944, his plane went down off the coast of Ceylon, present day Sri Lanka. He and the other surviving crew members spent two days in a life raft before a British destroyer picked them up. His back was broken. His recovery included a mountain facility on a Darjeeling tea plantation run by the Australian Red Cross, a hospital in Calcutta, a stay in North Africa and return to the United States on Christmas Day 1944.

He worked the family orchard for 60 years, growing pears and cherries, before he and his wife, Dorothy, retired to Sequim. He knew basic mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, welding and electrical work.

He is survived by his wife and extended family.

Frank Bennett Sr.

A service will be announced at a later date for Lower Elwha Tribe elder Frank Bennett Sr., of Port Angeles who died Feb. 20, 2010, at the age of 68.

He was born April 29, 1941.

Jay B. Skewes

No services were reported for Sequim resident Jay B. Skewes, who died Feb. 21, 2010, at the age of 71.

He was born Oct. 25, 1938.

Marion Belle Madsen

No services were reported for Sequim resident Marion Belle Madsen, who died Feb. 20, 2010, at the age of 88.

She was born Aug. 28, 1921.

Howard B. Herrett

Surrounded by his two daughters, Howard B. Herrett, long time resident of Sequim, Washington, peacefully passed away December 8, 2009, at the age of 94 in Vancouver, Washington following complications of a stroke.

Howard was born in Granger, Washington and graduated from high school in Mabton, Washington in 1934. He came to Sequim in 1935 and met the love of his life, Dorothy Dey, a lifelong resident of Sequim. They married in 1942 and settled in Sequim following Howard's discharge from the Army in 1944.

Howard was a logger from 1945 to 1968. After a devastating logging accident, Howard chose a second career in Real Estate. Upon retirement, he began H & H Rubber Stamps, serving merchants and the banking community for another 20 years.

Many family members and friends lovingly referred to Howard as "Mr. Sequim" because of his accomplishments and involvement in many local organizations. In addition to volunteering with his church, Trinity United Methodist, he drove for "Wheels", a forerunner of the transit system, was involved in Sequim Community Aid, serving as president for eight years, and a charter member of The Kiwanis Club. Howard was also a Hospice volunteer from 1988-2001, moving beds into homes of people who needed them and he was also an active volunteer with the Museum and Arts Center.

In 1981, Howard was selected as Sequim's Citizen of the year and honored at the state level. Sequim Mayor Jim Dinan appointed Howard president of the International Year of the Disabled Persons, working to get handicapped parking and curb cutouts for easier wheelchair access. He was also Honorary Grand Pioneer for the 107th Sequim Irrigation Festival in 2002.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Feb. 2000); and brothers Wilford Herrett and Harold Herrett.

After living at the Sequim 5th Avenue Retirement Center for three years, Howard moved to Vancouver, Washington in 2004 to be closer to family.

Howard is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Dave Phemister of Vancouver, Washington and Jan and Jeff Staudenraus of Bend, Oregon; brothers and sisters-in-law Donald and Alice Herrett of College Place, Washington, Paul and Doris Herrett of Everett, Washington; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Howard Herrett was laid to rest in Sequim View Cemetery in December. A celebration of his life will be held on March 1, at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, with a reception following at 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim, Washington 98382.
