James H. W. Luke
A memorial service will be held for Sequim resident James H. W. Luke at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 121 W. Maple St., Sequim.
He died April 26, 2011, at the age of 87.
The Rev. Victor Olvida is the officiant.
He was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., to James and Julia Crisp Luke.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and married Joan Bettridge on May 10, 1947, in Los Angeles, Calif.
He was a fireman with the Los Angeles Fire Department and a part-time carpenter until retirement in 1967. He became a full-time building contractor, building his family home in Los Angeles, then in Sequim in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; son Patrick of Los Angeles, and two grandchildren.

Thomas Keith Carlin

Thomas Keith Carlin, 62, of Sequim and
Port Angeles, Washington, succumbed to interstitial lung disease on April 23, 2011, at Sequim Health & Rehabilitation. Tom was born on December 13, 1948, in Culver City, California, the son of Beverly Rose (Reese) and Daniel Adrian Carlin.
He graduated high school in southern Califonia, and worked briefly in the studios before moving to Minneapolis, where he became the first news videographer in the Twin Cities area. During this time he also served as a volunteer fire fighter and sheriff, which led him to earn a certificate and job as an Emergency Services Technician.
A talented guitarist and singer from an early age, Tom returned to the
Los Angeles area to work as a music editor in television and films
(Romancing the Stone, Nine 1/2 Weeks, and Kenny Rogers’ The Gambler).
After 10 years in “the industry”, Tom went back to Minneapolis to explore yet another passion: cooking. Upon graduation from culinary school, he worked as a sous chef in Minneapolis before taking those skills to
The Dungeness Golf & Country Club on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. He also designed the kitchen at Prairie Springs Assisted Living, where for several years he served as its first executive chef. A back injury caused him to leave that field, after which he performed as a guitarist/singer at Sequim Community Church and on tour throughout the US Southwest with
The SkyLarks and the SnowBird Orchestra. In addition, he took pride in serving as a Certified Nurses Assistant at Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics (VIMO) in Port Angeles.
Tom is survived by his daughter Casey, step-daughter Sarah Goodwin,
mother and step-father Beverly and Gene Smola, brother and sister-in-law Dan and Lynn Carlin, sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Bruce Durning, sister Patty Carlin, cousins Kate Garde and Sue Sherlock; five nieces,
a nephew, and Tom’s companion Lynne Garvin.
A memorial service was held at 1:00pm on Friday, April 29, 2011, at Sequim Community Church, 950 North 5th Ave., Sequim, WA 98382.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted at Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics, 909 East Georgiana St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.
