In 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy on the transport ship the JohnLand for a three-year tour as a Radar operator third class. His ship carried an important person on board for a few days – the president of the Philippine Islands. They transported him to a battlecruiser only days before the US invasion of the Philippine Islands.

After the war, Dan returned to Chicago and married Lee and they had their first child Debbie. They moved to California and lived in San Francisco where their second child, Dana, was born. In 1953, the family moved to Mountain View , California – surrounded by orchards at the time – the heart of Silicon Valley today.

Their third child, Donald, was born in the Mountain View house. Dan worked at various jobs and even managed a couple of gas stations In the area. Then in 1969, Dan and Lee divorced. A few years later, while working at the Santa Clara University, Dan met Sue and they married in 1975.

Dan and Sue moved to Santa Clara. Sue had two sons, Kurt and Mark. Sadly, Sue died of cancer in 1983. Dan was devastated at the loss. He moved to Morgan Hill, and then met Lyn and they were married in 1985. Lyn had a son, Daniel, and a daughter, Terry, who is married to Paul.

After retiring, Dan and Lyn moved to Sequim, Washington. They bought 5 acres of land with a beautiful pond and views of the Cascade Mountains, and custom built their own home.

Lyn passed away in Sequim in September of 2017 and Dan passed away in March, 2018. They both died in their home as they had always wanted.
