Lillian G. Mast
A funeral Mass for Lillian G. Mast, of Sequim, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Sequim, with the Rev. Thomas W. Beattie presiding. Burial will be at Sequim View Cemetery.
Mrs. Mast, 88, died Dec. 27, 2005.
She was born June 28, 1917, in St. Fortunate, Quebec, Canada, to Joseph Ulric Gosselin and Reina Jalbert.
She and Harry D. Moss married Dec. 18, 1958, in Bristol, Conn. Mr. Moss died April 21, 2000.
Mrs. Mast was a waitress for several years and lived in Essex Junction, Vt., Ramona, Calif., San Luis Obispo, Calif., Daytona, Fla., Mashua, N.H., and Biddeford, Maine. She moved to Sequim in 1981. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, ballroom dancing, traveling and bridge.
She was a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church.    
She is survived by daughters Trudy Plourde, of Port Angeles, Gloria O?Keefe of Milton, Fla., and stepdaughter Judie Rogers, of Paso Robles, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry D. Moss; stepson James Miastowski; brother Leo Gosselin; and sister Oneda Palardy.

Victor Charles Walling Sr.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles, for Port Angeles resident Victor Charles Walling Sr.
Mr. Walling died Dec. 25, 2005, at the age of 90.
He was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Dayton, Ohio, to Frank and Harriet (Joly) Walling.
He graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in chemical engineering in 1938 and came to Seattle that same year.
He married Mary Frances Hirt in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1944. She preceded him in death in 1989.
In 1942, he joined Curtiss-Wright Corp. in Buffalo, N.Y.
He was sent to Australia as a technical service representative, attached to the United States Air Force. He accompanied the advance through the South Pacific Islands and into the Philippines. He witnessed the demise of the last P-40 Warhawk squadron in that theater, when the old fighter planes were replaced by planes of later design.
He returned to Seattle and was employed by Mallinckrodt Chemical Works of St. Louis, Mo.
In 1957, he joined Virginia Chemicals Inc. of West Norfolk, Va., who built a manufacturing plant to make groundwood brightening chemicals in Kalama.
He retired in 1979. He moved to Port Angeles that same year and built a house in the Joyce area.
His house had an extensive woodworking shop and for several years he repaired furniture donated to St. Vincent DePaul Charities.
He was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Bette Walling of Port Angeles; sons Victor Walling Jr. of California and Mark Walling of Tennessee; daughter Mary F. Anderson of Bothell; brother Robert Walling of Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Paul Walling.

Dorothy Marie Allen
A service has been held for former Sequim resident Dorothy Marie Allen.
Mrs. Allen died Dec. 3, 2005, in Sumner at age 73.
She was born May 9, 1932, in Round Prairie, Minn., to Leroy and Ann Moe Leech. The family moved to Sequim when she was 13, and she graduated from Sequim High School in 1950.
She and Chester Allen Boardman, of Hogeland, Mont., married in 1951. They later divorced.
She later married Howard Neal Allen. They lived in Missouri before moving to Sumner.
Mrs. Allen is survived by son Neal Allen, of Tacoma; sister Angeline Reandeau and brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Lolia Leech, all of Port Angeles; and brother and sister-in-law Calvin and Joy Leech, of Port Townsend.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Allen and son Allan Boardman.


Caroline E. Castle
No service has been reported for Port Angeles resident Caroline E. Castle, who died Dec. 29, 2005, at the age of 78.
She was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Port Angeles to Chester A. and Rose B. (Valentine) Fuller.
She married Ed Castle on April 28, 1962, in Coeur d?Alene, Idaho. He preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2004.
A chef her whole life, she moved to Arizona in 1968 and returned to the Olympic Peninsula in 2002.
After retirement, she and her husband moved into their motor home and spent 15 years traveling the country.
She was a member of Moose and Elk lodges.
She is survived by her son Larry J. Masters, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; daughter Sandra L. Tiller, of Port Angeles; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother William Fuller and sister Edith Linguall.

Elaine J. Ellsworth
A funeral Mass has been held for Elaine Ellsworth, who died Dec. 22, 2005, at age 63, of natural causes.
She was born May 18, 1942, in Cottonwood, Minn., to Elton A. Warren and Evelyn H. Truesdell. She married Ronald Ellsworth on June 18, 1960, at Queen of Angeles Catholic Church in Port Angeles.
Mrs. Ellsworth lived in Port Angeles for the past 60 years. Her occupations included working at the Coast Guard Exchange and later at the Clallam County Sheriff?s Department as a record specialist. She enjoyed arts and crafts.
She was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald J. Ellsworth Sr. of Port Angeles; sons Ron Ellsworth Jr., Andy Ellsworth and Darin Ellsworth all of Port Angeles; brothers Frank Warren, Gaylord Warren and Charles Warren all of Port Angeles, and Paul Warren of Utah; sisters Cynthia Loftus of Florida and Linda Ueblacker of Tacoma; and four grandchildren.

June Merscher Giffin
A service will be held at a later date for Sequim resident June Merscher Giffin, who died Dec. 14, 2005, at the age of 91.
She was born Oct. 17, 1914, in Albany, N.Y., to Harry and Anna Prudence Irving.
She was raised in Albany, spent several years in the Midwest and retired to Sequim in 1975.
She was the widow of John Merscher and Robert Giffin.
Mrs. Giffin was an accomplished organist during her retirement years from school teaching. She played for many local churches in Sequim and Port Angeles.
She was an avid reader who enjoyed baking and Cary Grant movies. She was known for her many purple sweaters that she knit herself; purple was the only color she chose to wear.
She also knit hats for premature babies for the ?Stitches from the Heart? knitting organization.
She is survived by three of her four children; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.


Patricia Mae Johnson
Private family services will be held at a later date in Montana for Sequim resident Patricia Mae Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson died Dec. 28, 2005, at the age of 76.
She was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Antler, N.D., to Leonard B. and Merle Doris (Tutty) Tooke.
She married Glenn O. Johnson on Dec. 28, 1951, in Great Falls, Mont. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1963.
She was an elementary school teacher in the Outlook and Plentywood school districts in Montana. Upon retirement, she moved to Sequim in 1989.
She enjoyed playing bingo and loved her cat, ?Condo.?
She is survived by her daughters Terry Lynn Rollins of Billings, Mont., Gayle Marie Brownell of Laurel, Mont., Rhonda Roe Fellon of Plentywood, Mont., and Darcy Ann O?Toole of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Marie Elizabeth ?Betty? Maasch
Marie Elizabeth "Betty" Maasch died in Eugene, Ore., on Dec. 24, 2005.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Marie Brown and Norton Deane.
She married Norman Maasch in New York on Sept. 7, 1946. He died in 2000.
She earned her undergraduate degree from Queen's College in New York and her master's degree from New York University. She was a science teacher on Long Island, N.Y., until her retirement in 1972.
In 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Maasch moved from New York to Sequim.
They were active members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she was very involved in the Episcopal Church Women's group and ran the workshop for the church's annual Christmas bazaar for many years.
She was an avid seamstress, knitter, craftsperson and baker, and she also had a green thumb, as did her husband. Their home was always surrounded by blossoms.
She will be remembered for her sweet nature, quick wit and delicious baked goods.
In March 2005, Mrs. Maasch moved to Eugene, Ore., to live closer to one of her daughters.
She is survived by her daughters Linda, of Victoria, B.C., Jeanne, of Eugene, Ore., and Susan, of Bend, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

Howard McArthur Pierce
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Howard McArthur Pierce, who died Dec. 23, 2005, at the age of 85.
He was born Oct. 30, 1920, in Sacramento, Calif., to Clare Belle and Calton Howard Pierce.
He served in World War II in the Pacific as a United States Marine.
He moved to Alaska in 1946 with his first wife, Carol. They arrived on Alaska Airlines? inaugural flight of their first DC4 and were met by many dignitaries at Elmendorf Air Force Base.
He spent many enjoyable years in Alaska and Hawaii.
He is survived by Nancy Pierce, his wife of 27 years, of Sequim; daughter Dashelle Goff of Anchorage, Alaska; stepchildren Jerry and Donna; and two grandchildren.

Lee O. Swanberg
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Lee O. Swanberg, who died Dec. 22, 2005, at the age of 92.
She was born Feb. 19, 1913, in Howard Lake, Minn., to Charles R. and Estella M. (Lee) Olson.
She married Marvin LeRoy Swanberg on April 7, 1934, in Howard Lake.
She lived in Watauga Beach in Port Orchard for many years. She and her husband later moved to Sequim. They maintained a summer residence in Yuma, Ariz.
She and her husband were happily married for 71 years.
She was an avid gardener and took great pride in being a homemaker.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Eastern Star Lodge, Garden Club and P.T.A.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin LeRoy Swanberg of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Kit and Teri Swanberg of Sequim; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Nell E. Teitzel
A service has been held for Sequim resident Nell E. Teitzel, who died Dec. 23, 2005, at the age of 93.
She was born July 31, 1912, in Seattle to Wesley L. and Mabelle E. (Aubert) Sischo.
She graduated from Port Townsend High School and attended business college.
She married Fred G. Teitzel in Port Townsend on June 5, 1933. He preceded her in death in 2004. They were married for 70 years.
Mrs. Teitzel lived in Port Townsend for many years, then in Adelma Beach and Sequim.
She worked as a secretary in the timber department at Crown Zellerbach from May 1951 until her retirement in 1969.
She enjoyed camping, hiking in the Olympics, and later traveling by RV with her husband to Arizona and other Southwest destinations. They also enjoyed fishing in eastern Washington.
She attended Sequim Community Church where she maintained a prayer chain for 12 years. She was a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star.
She will be remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred R. and Maria R. Teitzel, of Burien; daughter Virginia Clocksin of Covington, La; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and two beloved caretakers.

Albert Eugene White
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Albert Eugene White, who died Dec. 18, 2005, at the age of 79.
He was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Ogden, Utah, to Albert Lauder and Amy Burton (Pidcock) White.
He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific from 1944-1947.
He was a successful builder and built many beautiful homes in Ogden, Utah, and Fallbrook, Calif.
His early career included working at Hill Air Force Base in Utah and 34 years at NAA Rockwell in Southern California.
He was devoted to his family and countless friends who will remember him as a kind and gentle man. He was an example of courtesy and thoughtfulness. His loyalty to and love for his family made him a hero to his grandchildren.
He loved listening to music, traveling, going on picnics and being out and about. He enjoyed humor and was very witty himself.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Myrene Knowles White; daughters Susan White Gylling and Shelley White Holladay; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dane Eugene.

William ?Bill? D. Sump

Margaret Faye Jakeway
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 14 at Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave., for Sequim resident Margaret Faye Jakeway.
Mrs. Jakeway died Jan. 7, 2006, at the age of 85.
She was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Arco, Idaho, to William Van and Sadie Ann (Yotter) Sperry.
After being raised in Montana on a dairy farm, she worked for Western Union, where she was eventually transferred to Port Angeles.
In Port Angeles, she co-founded the Olympic Peninsula Bible Book Store, where she met her husband, Clarence LeRoy Jakeway. They married on March 18, 1954, in Port Angeles. They worked tirelessly as a team on their dairy farm in Carlsborg while raising their two daughters. He preceded her in death in February of 1989.
She was a faithful Sunday school teacher for 60 years and one of the original members of Sequim Bible Church. Much of her spare time was spent in giving of herself to missionary projects utilizing her sewing talents.
She loved to garden, especially raising flowers. She was a charter member of the original Farmer?s Market in Sequim. She spent many a Saturday delighting customers with her flowers and baked goods. She was well-known for her pies and cinnamon rolls.
She is survived by daughters Barbara L. Thomsen of Kirkland and Carolyn J. McAndie of Sequim; brother Bill Sperry of Montana; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Paul, Orville, Milford, Gene and Glenn Sperry.

Jim Skelly

Perry Charles Bolster Jr.
A service has been held for Sequim resident Perry Charles Bolster Jr., who died Dec. 27, 2005, at the age of 81.
He was born June 24, 1924, in Seattle to Bessie (Leighton) and Perry Charles Bolster Sr.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton before enlisting in the Navy in 1942. A petty officer second class and aviation machinists mate, he served in the Navy for four years, on Saipan.
He married Carol Durham on May 2, 1959, in Port Angeles.
Mr. Bolster owned and operated Lake Sutherland Resort, Bolster Appliance and Refrigeration in Port Angeles and Bolster Construction on Thetis Island, British Columbia, Canada.
His pastimes included spending time with family, boating, scuba diving, fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking.
He was active in Sequim Valley Foursquare Church.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and John Birch Society.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Bolster of Sequim; sons Steve Bolster of Renton, Brad Bolster of Sequim and Dan Bolster of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters Carole Worland of Bothell and Dollie Bolster of Sequim; brother Ken Bolster of Thetis Island, British Columbia, Canada; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Randy Bolster.

Reginald Darwin Edwards
No service has been reported for Port Angeles resident Reginald Darwin Edwards, who died Jan. 1, 2006, at the age of 77.
He was born Dec. 6, 1928, in Pine City, Iowa, to George and Hazel (Reedy) Edwards.
He served in the United States Army from 1946-48 as a gun sergeant.
He was the owner of Golden Crown Construction.
His interests included his car, a fully restored 1966 Mercury convertible, his friends and family. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge.
He is survived by his sons Bruce Edwards and Mike Edwards, both of Port Angeles; daughter Kathy Stone of Loon Lake; sisters Billy and Carlee; and three grandchildren.

Cecil ?Bud? Monroe Fralick
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Cecil ?Bud? Monroe Fralick, who died Jan. 3, 2006, at the age of 87.
He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Baineville, Mont., to Frank Newton and Marie Elma (Rutledge) Fralick.
After high school, he obtained advanced certifications in the military. A chief petty officer and World War II veteran, he retired from the United States Navy in 1959. His naval career included Moffett Naval Air Station, USS Yorktown, USS Bonhomme Richard, Kodiak Naval Station and Pearl Harbor.
After his naval career, he worked in public service and private business support in Sunnyvale, Calif.
He married Reba Pauline Rutledge.
He was a member of Independent Bible Church and Fleet Reserve Association.
He is survived by his wife, Reba Pauline Fralick of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Dick Whitten of Sparks, Nev.; sisters Janet, Ella and Edith; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Norma Jean Hazel
A funeral Mass has been celebrated for Sequim resident Norma Jean Hazel, who died Jan. 3, 2006, at the age of 71.
She was born July 15, 1934, in Corning, Iowa, to Ralph and Lenora (Hendrickson) Stewart.
She married Robert M. Hazel on Sept. 17, 1954, in Reno, Nev. He preceded her in death on July 17, 1998.
Mrs. Hazel was a homemaker and a Red Cross volunteer for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church and a Sequim resident for the past 20 years.
She is survived by her son Robert M. Hazel Jr. of Issaquah; daughter and son-in-law Lou Anne Hazel and Tracy P. Hamby of Beaumont, Calif.; sister Betty Hartley of Salem, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

Clifford T. Myers
No service was reported for Sequim resident Clifford T. Myers, who died Jan. 4, 2006, at the age of 74.
Mr. Myers was born Aug. 27, 1931, to Thomas and Aletha (Gooch) Myers.
He served in the United States Air Force from November of 1951 to November of 1954.
He married Colleen Percy on Dec. 15, 1956.
He was a Seattle firefighter for 26 years. He moved to Sequim in 2002.
He was a member of the American Legion and Eagles Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen Myers of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Diane Douty of Sequim and Steve and Karen Douty of Seabeck; daughters and sons-in-law Bonita and Dennis Hanna of Seattle, Kathy and Greg Hagen of Pasco, and Debbie and Ed Fouts of Toutle; brother and sister-in-law John and Marie Myers of Arizona; sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Ivan Stinson of Turlock, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Cecil L. Smith
No service has been reported for former Sequim resident Cecil L. Smith, who died Dec. 30, 2005, at the age of 91.
He was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Abilene, Texas.
He retired from the United States Air Force, then retired from the United States government as an auditor.
He married Helen (Duncan) Smith in 1982 in Sequim.
He enjoyed golfing, yard work, being outdoors and being with his family.
He was a Sequim resident from 1976-2005.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Smith of Bend, Ore.; sons James Smith of Eldorado Hills, Calif., and Rob Dewitt of Bend; daughters Sherron Nelson of Anchorage, Alaska, Constance Hawley of Crescent City, Calif., and Lisa Dewitt of Tucson, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother; his first wife Lois in 1972; and second wife Sue in 1978.

William Donald Sump
A service has been held for Sequim resident William Donald Sump, who died Dec. 24, 2005, at the age of 65.
He was born March 6, 1940, in Billings, Mont., to Donald Fredrick and Evelyn Leah (Hazleton) Sump.
He married Elizabeth Louise Kraemer on June 14, 1964.
As a small child he lived in the World War II detention camp at Hart Mountain, Wyo., where his father worked.
As a youth, he was involved in scouting and became an Eagle Scout.
He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1958, from Sheridan Junior College, and from the College of Engineering at the University of Wyoming in 1964.
He was a member of the Wyoming National Guard and involved in competitive shooting at Camp Perry, Ohio. He also attended officers candidate school.
He met his wife Elizabeth while both were employed at Yellowstone National Park.
He was employed by Boeing from 1964 until his retirement in 1995, when he and his wife made their home near Sequim. He was a research engineer in the stress lab for many years. He also was a field service customer support engineer, trouble-shooting problems for individual airplanes.
He enjoyed spending time on projects with his son, Matt; traveling with his family; and competitive shooting, at which he became a master. He enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, his pride being a B-17G with a 103-inch wingspan made from his own plans. He was a member of the Sequim Remote Control Aeronauts. He also raised tropical fish and koi.
He was a member of Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sump of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Matt and Cindy Sump of Sequim; brother and sister-in-law John and Charleen Sump of Spanish Fork, Utah; sister and brother-in-law Marian and Al Smith of Lewiston-Clarkston, Idaho; and a grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a grandson in 1999.

Nell E. Teitzel
A service has been held for Sequim resident Nell E. Teitzel, who died Dec. 23, 2005, at the age of 93.
She was born July 31, 1912, in Seattle to Wesley L. and Mabelle E. (Aubert) Sischo.
She graduated from Port Townsend High School and attended business college.
She married Fred G. Teitzel in Port Townsend on June 5, 1933. He preceded her in death in 2004. They were married for 70 years.
Mrs. Teitzel lived in Port Townsend for many years, then in Adelma Beach and Sequim.
She worked as a secretary in the timber department at Crown Zellerbach from May 1951 until her retirement in 1969.
She enjoyed camping, hiking in the Olympics, and later traveling by RV with her husband to Arizona and other Southwest destinations. They also enjoyed fishing in eastern Washington.
She attended Sequim Community Church where she maintained a prayer chain for 12 years. She was a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star.
She will be remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred R. and Maria R. Teitzel, of Burien; daughter Virginia Clocksin of Covington, La; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two beloved caretakers.

Aurel Todor Trailov
A memorial service for Sequim resident Aurel Todor Trailov will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 11 at St. Luke?s Episcopal Church, 512 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim, A reception follows.
Mr. Trailov died Dec. 27, 2005, at the age of 89.
He was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Dolovo, Yugoslavia, to Todor and Marina Trailov.
He served in the Royal Yugoslavian Air Force and United States Air Force.
He married Tatiana Benzev on April 24, 1944, in Cairo, Egypt.
After World War II, he settled in the Chicago, Ill., area. He was an electrical engineer.
He retired to Kihei, Maui, Hawaii and moved to Sequim in 2000.
A man of few words, he spoke through his photography, which was his love and main interest.
He is survived by his wife, Tatiana Trailov of Sequim; children Marie-Louise Nikitovich of Woodstock, Ill., Nadine Bobit of Rolling Hills, Calif., Janet McColl, of Sequim, Nevette Neal, of Glendale, Ariz.,l Mickey Trailov, of Franklin, Tenn., Danny Trailov, of Newport Richey, Fla., Peter Trailov, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Paul Anthony of Torrance, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.


Owen Arthur Barnes
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Owen Arthur Barnes, who died Jan. 11 at the age of 85.
He was born June 12, 1920, in Seattle to Charles Albert and Ruth (Owens) Barnes.
The oldest of three children, he grew up in Fauntleroy and West Seattle, and graduated from West Seattle High School and the University of Washington.
He proudly served in the Army during World War II.
He married Alice Ofstad on March 29, 1952.
Together they raised their two daughters in Bellevue.
Family was very important to him and his greatest enjoyment came from being with them.
After his retirement from Boeing Computer Services in 1985, he and Alice spent a lot of time traveling, taking pictures, and making more memories.
The family treasures thousands of slides and photographs.
He and his family had strong spiritual beliefs, which gave great comfort and strength in helping them through the final stages of his illness.
He often was referred to as a gentle man and those who knew him best also knew him as a courageous man.
He also was known for the love and humor he shared with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Alice; daughters and sons-in-law Jeanyne and Harry Quanz of Redmond; and Laurelyn and John Reiten of Melhus, Norway; brother Charles Barnes; sister Lorraine Stewart; and his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Barbara Benedict

She was born Dec. 31, 1937, in Darwen, England, to James and Nellie (Collins) Cox.
She married James W. Benedict on July 2, 1982, in Rochester, Mich.
She was educated at Birmingham University in England.
She served as a schoolteacher in England and Wisconsin before becoming a housewife while living in Ohio, Michigan, Texas, and Washington.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and duplicate bridge.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Benedict of Sequim; son Andrew McKewan of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; daughters Susan Thome of Carson, City, Mich.; and Caroline Rhodes of Houston, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Margaret ?Peggy? Essman
A funeral Mass for former Sequim resident Margaret ?Peggy? Essman was celebrated in Battleground. Another service will be held mid-summer in Port Angeles.
Mrs. Essman died Jan. 4, 2006, at the age of 80.
She was born April 15, 1926, in Port Angeles to Elmer and Marguerite (Blais) Wilder.
She married John C. Essman. They lived and raised their children in Kelso/Longview, then moved to Port Angeles where they built View Vista Mobile Home Park.
They later retired and moved to Sequim, where they were members of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church. The Essmans moved from Sequim to Battleground in 2004.
Mrs. Essman is survived by her husband, John Essman; sons and daughter-in-law Jan and John Essman Jr., and Gary Essman; daughter Virginia Essman; sisters Fern Cahill, Mary Kling and Suzanna Wilder; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.


Paul E. Katilius
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Paul E. Katilius, who died Jan. 1, 2006, at the age of 66.
He was born July 2, 1939, in Homestead, Penn., to Louis and Helen (Navickas) Katilius.
Mr. Katilius was employed with International Harvester in Kentucky for many years. He retired and moved to Sequim in 1980.
He enjoyed meeting new people and loved wildlife and flowers.
He is survived by his sister, Marie English of Sequim.

C. Gene Nelson
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident C. Gene Nelson, who died Dec. 27, 2005, of an apparent heart attack at the age of 54.
He was born June 4, 1951, in Moscow, Idaho, to Richard and JoAnne (Cochran) Nelson.
He attended the Garfield, Wash., schools and graduated from Garfield High School in 1969.
After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy on Oct. 16, 1969 and was discharged on Sept. 14, 1973.
He returned to Garfield and worked various jobs in the area for four years.
He worked with a paint crew on the Lower Granite Dam, drove a harvest grain truck for Ted Fanning for two years and worked for the state of Washington and drove a snowplow during the winter months for two years. He also cut and sold firewood in the area.
He moved to Kent and attended the Green River Community College at Auburn. He graduated with an associate degree in applied science in forestry technology.
He became interested in the fishing industry through some friends at college and decided to try it out. He bought a 17-foot boat and started a 21-year fishing career in Southeast Alaska. He later traded up to a 40-foot boat.
In 1995 he moved to Port Angeles, where he started a boat repair business. He enjoyed learning to weld aluminum and that was most of his repair work.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his parents Richard and Joanne Nelson of Garfield, Wash.; brothers Dwain Nelson of Tucson, Ariz.; and Dick Nelson of Moses Lake; sister Susan Brooks of Helena, Mont.; and friend and partner Sally Knight of Port Angeles.

She was executive secretary for the Department of Energy in Las Vegas, Nev. and Farmer?s Insurance in Bellevue; and a Microsoft Temp. agent in Issaquah. She enjoyed floral design and also worked in floral shops in Issaquah.
She was a member of St. Luke?s Episcopal Church in Sequim; N.W. Florists Association; Museum of Flight; and since 1995, The Mountaineers.
A certified professional secretary since 1987; she also was a NW member at large with the Association for Office Professionals, Chapter 39000.
Mrs. O?Neill was divorced. She is survived by her son Dennis Leland O?Neill of Port Angeles; stepson Michael James O?Neill of Houston, Texas; stepdaughters Colleen O?Neill Slade of Fort Rucker, Ala.; Marilyn O?Neill of Salsbury, Md.; and Jenny O?Neill Goertimiller of Trappe, Md.

A service has been held for Sequim resident Floyd Steven Tate, who died Jan. 9, 2006, at the age of 91.
He was born May 7, 1914, in Champaign, Ill., to Alexander and Elsie (Russell) Tate.
He married Margaret Christine Bateman on Nov. 18, 1933, in Urbana, Ill.
He served in the United States Navy as a propeller instructor.
He was a right of way agent (procurement) for the state of Arizona.
He owned and traded horses. He loved dogs, was a church organist and called square dances. He also was a golfer and a bowler.
He was a member of Sequim Valley Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Tate of Sequim; three nieces; a cousin and an aunt.


Patricia Dean Triz
A service will be scheduled at a later date for Sequim resident Patricia Dean Triz, who died Dec. 28, 2005, at the age of 61.
She was born April 14, 1944, in Long Beach, Calif., to Berthold Franklin and Norma Johana (Behlen) Tiesing.
She married Gary Francis Triz in Sonora, Calif., on Oct. 27, 1970.
She took great joy and much love in training and working with Andalusian horses in Happy Valley.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Gary Triz; sister Carol Mang; a nephew and a niece.

Cecil ?Bud? Monroe Fralick
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Cecil ?Bud? Monroe Fralick, who died Jan. 3, 2006, at the age of 87.
He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Baineville, Mont., to Frank Newton and Marie Elma (Rutledge) Fralick.
After high school, he obtained advanced certifications in the military. A chief petty officer and World War II veteran, he retired from the United States Navy in 1959. His naval career included Moffett Naval Air Station, USS Yorktown, USS Bonhomme Richard, Kodiak Naval Station and Pearl Harbor.
After his naval career, he worked in public service and private business support in Sunnyvale, Calif.
He married Reba Pauline Rutledge.
He was a member of Independent Bible Church and Fleet Reserve Association.
He is survived by his wife, Reba Pauline Fralick of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Dick Whitten of Sparks, Nev.; sisters Janet, Ella and Edith; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William Donald Sump

He was born March 6, 1940, in Billings, Mont., to Donald Fredrick and Evelyn Leah (Hazleton) Sump.
He married Elizabeth Louise Kraemer on June 14, 1964.
As a small child he lived in the World War II detention camp at Hart Mountain, Wyo., where his father worked.
As a youth, he was involved in scouting and became an Eagle Scout.

Jane A. Malaney

Mrs. Malaney died Jan. 19, 2006, at the age of 84.
She was born April 12, 1921, in Seattle to William H. and S. Mildred (Holloway) Martin.
She graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle and attended business school there.
She married Curtis L. Malaney on Feb. 22, 1952, in Seattle. He preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1989.
She worked for the civil service during her husband?s Army career.
They lived in Berlin and Frankfurt, West Germany; Monterey, Calif.; and Fort Bragg, N.C. They moved to Port Angeles after her husband retired from the Army.
She worked for the North Olympic Library System in Port Angeles for a number of years before her retirement.
She was an accomplished painter and a member of the local Art League. She was a talented seamstress and did beautiful needlework. She loved taking care of her garden. She also was very interested in genealogy and spent many years researching her family tree.
She was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Port Angeles.
Although she had no children of her own, her nieces Carol O?Hara, of Bellevue, and Janet Sandquist, of Mill Creek, Calif.; a grandnephew; and three grandnieces were very close to her.

Arthur John Holden
A service has been held for Sequim resident Arthur John Holden, who died Jan. 14, 2006, at the age of 89.
Mr. Holden was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Ipswich, Suffolk County, England to Arthur and Ada Agnes (Archer) Holden.
He attended St. Margaret's Church and School in Ipswich until the eighth grade.
He worked at a local school in Ipswich, preparing the sports field for the children to play.
He moved to the United States in 1947, after serving from 1940-1946 in the Suffolk regiment of the British Army during World War II. A corporal, he was stationed in England during the entire war.
He was married to Maltida Jane Holden for 53 years. They married in Barry, St. Edmunds, England, on Oct. 21, 1942. She died in May 1997.
He married Dorothy Ann Colbert Holden June 14, 1998, in Sequim.
Mr. Holden owned three successful nurseries and specialized in registered rhododendrons.
He belonged to the Rhododendron Society on Harstone Island in Shelton and Trinity United Methodist Church in Sequim.
Always young at heart, he loved good music, his flowers and dogs.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy A. Holden; son Paul H. Holden; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Harvey Graf, of Shelton, and Eva and Weldon Sheldon, of Sequim; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ken B. Price
No service has been reported for Port Angeles resident Ken B. Price, who died Jan. 17, 2006, at the age of 90.
Mr. Price was born May 31, 1915, in Bedford, Penn., to George Lloyd and Ada (Rebecca) Beegle.
He graduated from Geneva High School in Geneva, Ohio, in 1934.
He married Adel Rosenberg on Oct. 22, 1938, in Covington, Ky.
A previous marriage to Marjorie Haywood in 1935 ended in divorce in 1937. They had a daughter, Virginia Robison.
Mr. Price served in the United States Coast Guard on active duty from 1942-1946 and United States Coast Guard Reserves from 1946-1975. He retired as a chief petty officer in 1975.
He was a lineman for Ohio Bell Telephone from 1940-1947. In 1947, he transferred to Pacific Telephone & Telegraph in Port Angeles, where he retired in 1978.
He enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and friends and telling stories about all the buildings he wired for telephones, one being Olympic Memorial Hospital, now Olympic Medical Center, in Port Angeles.
He was a member of Independent Bible Church in Port Angeles and the Masonic Lodge in Port Angeles from 1945-2006.
He is survived by his wife, Adel R. Price, of Port Angeles; sons and daughters-in-law Ken W. Price, G. Brandon and Jackie Price, of Port Angeles; and G. Mark and Debbie Price of Belgrade, Mont.; daughter and son-in-law Virginia and Van Robison of Ruskin, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his twin sister Kathryn Price.

George H. Stevens
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident George H. Stevens, who died Jan. 14, 2006, at the age of 90.
Mr. Stevens was born June 2, 1915, in Seattle to Harold M. and Cora (Aspen) Stevens.
He married Anita Frizell on July 25, 1936, in Seattle. She preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 2003.
Mr. Stevens moved to Port Angeles in October 1945 and established an office for physical therapy, which continued for 50 years.
He enjoyed hiking, fishing, and dancing in his younger years. In his later years, he enjoyed baking bread and pie, winning awards at the Clallam County Fair for his baking. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica.
He was past master of the Pomona Grange. He had served as the deputy master of the Washington State Grange.
He was active in the Port Angeles Masonic Lodge No. 69 and was a past master. He also was a deputy grand master of District No. 1 F&AM (Masonic).
He is survived by his foster son, Lawrence "Larry" Smallwood, of San Lorenzo, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra and Wayne Roedell, of Port Angeles, and Carol and Rockne Lechelt of La Pine, Ore.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Jack Louis Gross
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 1, 2006, at Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, for Sequim resident Jack Louis Gross, who died Jan. 27 at the age of 87.
He was born June 9, 1918, in New York, N.Y., to Samuel and Antoinette (Uffenheimer) Gross.
He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945.
He married Mary Louise Uhls on Feb. 16, 1947. They were later divorced.
He married Theresa (Terry) Fortman Rambo on Nov. 9, 1980.
He earned degrees from City College in New York and University of California, Los Angeles.
He worked as a teacher in Los Angeles and Santa Cruz, Calif.
He retired in 1978 and moved to Florida in 1980. He lived in Sequim for three-and-a-half years.
He enjoyed languages, traveling, bridge and music. He also enjoyed teaching, even after retirement. He prepared several boys and a girl for their bar/bat mitzvahs as well as tutored students in reading.
He was a member of Olympic B'Nai Shalom Havurah and had a continued association with Temple Beth David Community Center, Spring Hill, Fla.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons Michael and David Gross, of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Robert Gross of Monte Serrano, Calif.; stepdaughter Deborah Rambo, of Sequim; and stepson and wife, Gary and Heather Rambo of Port Angeles; two granddaughters; and five nieces.
He was preceded in death by his brother and wife, Lawrence and Shirley Gross; and sisters Katherine Gross Wasserman and Anna Gross Greenly.

Suzanne L. Arnold
A service will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Suzanne L. Arnold, who died Jan. 14, 2006, after being hit by a truck, at the age of 61.
She was born Oct. 26, 1944, in Flushing, N.Y., to Theodore and Grace Jean (Moore) Lindenberg.
She married James William Arnold on Dec. 19, 1970, in Winter Park, Fla.
She earned a bachelor?s degree in business administration from Rollins College, Fla.
Mrs. Arnold was a computer programmer in Orlando, Fla.; a systems specialist in Reston, Va.; a systems analyst, IT manager, and fine art photographer in Saratoga, Calif.; and fine art photographer and painter in Sequim.
She enjoyed gourmet cooking, was a wine appreciation instructor and world traveler. Her photography specialized in the landscapes and historical architecture of Scotland, Ireland and England.
She was a member of the Washington Chapter of Plein Aire Artists of America and a former member of Blue Whole Cooperative Art Gallery. She was vice president and president-elect of Sequim Open Aire Market.
She is survived by her husband, James Arnold of Sequim; mother Grace Lindenberg of Sequim; and brother Theodore Lindenberg III of Fairfax, Va.

Nova Patricia Thurman Bliss
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Nova Patricia Thurman Bliss, who died Jan. 24, 2006, at the age of 76.
She was born June 26, 1929, in Elma to William James and Minnie Irene Lucille (Clark) Bramer.
She married Elton Thurman on Aug. 13, 1949. He preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1978.
She married H. Donald Bliss in December 1990. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1998.
She attended Peninsula College, where she studied creative writing and earned her G.E.D.
Mrs. Bliss was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed painting, writing and music. She was a member of Independent Bible Church in Port Angeles, Rebekahs, TOPS, and Senior Citizen Center. She also worked with mentally challenged people.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Mary L. Helgeson, Nova P. and John L. Helgeson, Larry Peters, Leanna M. and Ralph G. Dyker, and Kay L. and Jack R. Cinotto; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several stepchildren.
Her daughter Billie Irene Peters preceded her in death.

Louis R. Fauteaux
A service has been held for Sequim resident Louis R. Fauteaux, who died Jan. 16, 2006, at the age of 72.
Mr. Fauteaux was born March 18, 1932, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Louis C. and Elizabeth C. (Pratt) Fauteaux.
He served in the United States Navy Seabees from March 1951-March 1955.
He married Helga G. Ziemann in Canoga Park, Calif., on April 12, 1964.
A building contractor, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, restoring old cars and boats, and traveling.
He loved his family and grandchildren. He had many friends and knew no strangers.
He lived in New Mexico, California, Washington, Alaska, Florida, Arkansas and Oregon.
He is survived by his wife, Helga G. Fauteaux, of Sequim; sons Richard M. Fauteaux, of Kent, and Louis S. and David Fauteaux, of Spokane; daughters Tammy and Terry; brother William Fauteaux, of Youcalla, Ore.; sisters Joyce Walcott and Marilee Fisher, both of Youcalla, Ore.; and nine grandchildren.


Luis Manuel Garcia
A service has been held for Sequim resident Luis Manuel Garcia, who died in January 2006 at the age of 49.
Mr. Garcia was born Nov. 21, 1956, in Zacatecas, Mexico, to Antonio and Francisca Pereyra Garcia.
He lived in Sequim for 14 years.
He worked as a bartender and restaurant manager. He enjoyed helping people, laughing and having fun with his friends, and he loved his job. He had many good friends in Sequim and in the surrounding areas.
He was a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Sequim.
He is survived by his parents, Antonio and Francisca Garcia; brothers Antonio, Fernando, Vidal, Francisco, Martin and Refugio; and sisters Carmen, Esther, Margarita, Rosalia, Juliana, Evangelina, Raquel, Maritona and Gayle.
He was preceded in death by his very good friend Fred Chandler.

Betty Maude Hoffman
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Betty Maude Hoffman, who died Jan. 21, 2006, at the age of 82.
She was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Glendale, Calif., to Theodore Eugene and Ruby Grace (Kentfield) Hoffman.
She served in the Women?s Army Corps during World War II.
She was a bookkeeper and property manager.
An adventurous outdoorswoman who excelled in tennis and skiing during her youth, she enjoyed RV traveling around the country and often went camping with her family. She was an avid reader and in later life became quite skilled in songbird carving. She also was a very creative weaver.
She belonged to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia B. and Keith Detterich of Sun City West, Ariz., and a niece.

Violet Lucille ?Torchy? Jones
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Violet Lucille ?Torchy? Jones, who died Jan. 21, 2006, at the age of 83.
She was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Havelock, Neb., to Walter and Bessie Law.
After graduating from Grant High School in Portland, Ore., in 1941, she was a supervisor in the IBM keypunch department at Oregon Shipyards during World War II.
She married Earl L. ?Jonesy? Jones in Collingswood, N.J., on Oct. 30, 1945.
After working for Chevron USA Inc. in California for 27 years, she retired to enjoy golf. She lived in SunLand for 22 years and celebrated four holes-in-one.
Survivors include her husband; daughter and son-in-law Sherie Lynn and David Wahl, of Edmonds; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The Neptune Society in Lynnwood was in charge of arrangements.


Susan Elizabeth Wheeler
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for Susan Elizabeth Wheeler, who died Jan. 24, 2006, at the age of 63.
She was born April 10, 1942, in Washington, D.C., to Donald Niven and Mary Margaret (Lukes) Wheeler.
She graduated from Sequim High School in 1960. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and a teaching certificate from Portland State University.
She worked as a legal secretary for legal services and for the Oregon Law Center.
She was a member of the Women?s International League for Peace and Freedom and was a lifelong activist for peace and justice.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother and a champion of the underdog and savior of lost causes.
She enjoyed traveling, camping, and gardening. She documented her life with a flair for amateur photography.
She is survived by her brothers, Stephen Francis Vause, of Sequim, and Timothy Lukes Wheeler of Baltimore, Md.; sister Marion (Honeybee) Wheeler Burns, of Sequim; daughters Erika Lynn Hamerquist, of Sequim, Karen Margaret Hamerquist, of Chico, Calif., and Jacqueline (Williams) Green of Chesapeake, Va.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her younger brother, Nathaniel Robinson Wheeler.

Bessie G. Hester

Mrs. Hester died Feb. 1, 2006, at the age of 80.
She was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Ritchie, Mo., to Ted and Mina (Harrison) Clayton.
She married Carl Christopher Hester in Neosho, Mo., on May 23, 1944. He preceded her in death in 1990.
She lived in Port Angeles while working as a dietary specialist at Crestwood Convalescent Center.
She enjoyed making Christmas fudge, canning and tending her flowers. She loved being a grandmother and taking care of her friends.
She was a member of Bethany Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Carl Leroy of Kuwait, and Gailin and Julie Hester of Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Gwen and Gary Blevins of Port Angeles; son-in-law Gary Gebhardt; and seven grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Louella; twin children who died at birth; sisters Audrey Tisdale and Michelle Wakin; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lelah Stam
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 10 at Seventh-day Adventist Church, 510 Seventh Ave., Southeast Puyallup for former Sequim resident Lelah Stam, who died Jan. 25, 2006, at the age of 73.
Mrs. Stam was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Sequim.
She was a life-long member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She married Robert E. Stam in August of 1954.
They had two children together, Robert Jr. and Victoria.
In 1966,she went to work for Rohr Industries of Auburn.
She worked there for 25 years, until she was forced to take an early retirement due to health problems.
She is survived by her ex-husband, Robert Earl Stam of Hayden, Idaho; son Robert Earl Stam Jr. of Tacoma; daughter Victoria E. Stam-Turner; son-in-law Tim Turner; brothers and sisters-in-law Norval T. and Grace Howe of Auburn, and Oliver W. and Lee Howe of Long Beach; sister and brother-in-law Pearl J. and Charles Snyder of Fairfield, Calif.; sisters-in-law Frances (Marion) Howe and Kate (Orval) Howe; brothers-in-law Raymond Leaming and Larry Blackwood; a grandchild; a step-grandchild; Robert E. Stam?s son and daughter-in-law Todd and Zetta Stam and their three children; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Steven Eugene Biss

Mr. Biss, 48, was struck by a motorist on Jan. 29, 2006.
He was born Aug. 8, 1957, in Port Angeles to William Henry and Marjorie Louise (Wright) Biss.
He married Alice Sue Duggins on Jan. 15, 1979, in Port Angeles.
He served in the United States Navy in Portsmouth, Va., from Nov. 18, 1974-Nov. 25, 1980. He achieved the rank of machinists mate third class.
He earned an associate of science degree in surveying.
He worked at ITT Rayonnier Pulp and Paper Mill and later worked for ParaTransit Services.
He loved hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, and spending time with family and friends.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Amalgamated Transit Union, and American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Sue Biss; son Thomas Harold Biss; daughter Luella Bell Rosa; mother Marjorie Louise Biss; brother William Leroy Biss; and sister Sharon L. Smith, all of Port Angeles; and two grandchildren.

Daniel E. Higday
A celebration of life will be held at noon, Feb. 11 for Daniel E. Higday, who died Jan. 29, 2006, at the age of 84.
Mr. Higday was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Burns, Wyo., to Fred and Bessie (Kinnison) Higday.
He married Shirley Adkison, who preceded him in death in 1985.
He served in the Army Engineer Corps in Fort Peck, Mont.
He received a degree in engineering from the University of Wyoming.
He was an excavating engineer in Southern California before retiring to Sequim.
He loved flying and classic cars. He was a member of the Model A Club; Sequim Valley Car Club; and Aircraft Owner and Pilots Association.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Monte and Eva Higday; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Alice Higday; sisters and brothers-in-law Winnie and John Hunter, and Verda and Keith Hopkins; and seven grandchildren.

Bessie F. Seedorf
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 27 at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane for former Sequim resident Bessie F. Seedorf.
Mrs. Seedorf died Feb. 2, 2006, at the age of 92.
She was born Nov. 18, 1913, in Spokane to Victor and Clara (Hendricks) Johnson.
She graduated from North Central High School in Spokane in 1931.
She married Johannes ?Hans? M. Seedorf in August of 1932.
She was a caregiver for children and adults in Spokane, San Diego and Seattle.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Ronald and Maida Seedorf of Poulsbo, Martin and Rita Seedorf of Cheney, and James and Carol Seedorf of Eagle River, Alaska; brother Harold Anderson of Colfax; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971.

Kenneth Andrew Alstrup
No service was reported for Sequim resident Kenneth Andrew Alstrup, who died Feb. 2, 2006, at the age of 61.
Mr. Alstrup was born in Highland Park, N.J. on Dec. 20, 1944.
He married (Joann) Andrea Horvath in 1967.
He was active in the Boy Scouts as a scout and leader in his son?s troop; and with his daughter in Indian Princesses. He also coached soccer in North Brunswick, N.J.
He was a former elder in the Bayard St. Presbyterian Church, New Brunswick, N.J. He was president of the Bayard Street Adult Group for many years.
His love of growing roses ranked almost as high as his love of bicycling. His numerous rose gardens in New Jersey were enjoyed by many, but most of all by his wife. He achieved his goal of a pannier bicycle trip in Provence upon his retirement. He shared his travelogues of his worldwide trips with those he loved.
Collecting model trains was a passion, but his real joy was in designing and building the layouts.
His carpentry skills were welcomed by Habitat for Humanity.
He recently moved from Hillsborough, N.J., to Sequim.
He retired from Marlite Corp. in 2002 after 26 years of service.
He is survived by his wife (Joann) Andrea Horvath; son Todd Andrew of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Megan Joann of Santa Monica, Calif.; brother Thomas of Denver, Colo.; sisters Diane Robbins of Media, Penn.; and Nancy Briggs of Littleton, Colo.; mother-in-law Joan Horvath; brothers- and sisters-in-law; and 15 nephews and nieces.

Margaret Lane DeWitt
No services were reported for Sequim resident Margaret Lane DeWitt, who died Jan. 30, 2006, at the age of 89.
Mrs. DeWitt was born April 4, 1916 in Snohomish to James and Elura (Full) Lane.
She grew up in Cheney and attended Cheney Normal School.
She married Daniel DeWitt on Sept. 1, 1945.
She started her teaching career in 1936 in Vancouver. In 1973, she was chosen as ?Teacher of the Year? in the Spokane School District. For 25 years, she taught in Spokane, where she retired from teaching in 1980.
After her retirement, she and her husband traveled around the United States in a motor home and finally settled in Sequim in September of 1987.
In 1988, she started volunteering at what was then the Sequim Dungeness Museum. She worked at the museum gift shop and started the genealogy department, first as the assistant director. She became the director in 1997. During this time, she worked side by side with her husband in planning the new administration building for the Museum and Arts Center, which was completed in 1998. The administration building was named after him after his death in 2001. She worked full-time as director until the end of 2001. Since 2002, she continued to work in genealogy, research, and exhibits at the museum.
Active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 10 years, she spent many hours teaching a Coast Guard safe boating class and making free safety inspections on boats for the public.
The DeWitts also worked three weeks at the New Dungeness Lighthouse during the interim period between the time the Coast Guard personnel stopped manning the lighthouse and when the Lighthouse Society took over the responsibilities.
She also volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, Habitat for Humanity, Sequim Lions Club and Sequim Community Aid. At Habitat for Humanity, she helped select people for Habitat homes. At Sequim Lions Club, she donated time and talents with cane sales and assisted with the medical van in doing various health tests. At Sequim Community Aid, she arranged aid for people in need.
She also was active in the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Peninsula Button Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
In 1999, she and her husband were selected as ?Citizen of the Year? by the Sequim Prairie Grange. She also received ?The President of the United States Volunteer Service Award? in 2004 and 2005.
Her favorite hobbies were quilting, button collecting, and geo-caching.
Her family remembers her as a loving, caring, and devoted mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Rick and Roberta De Witt of Sequim; stepson Daniel De Witt Jr. of Jacksonville, Ark.; daughters and sons-in-law Margaret and Rick Eastlund of Lakewood, Colo.; Susan and Greg Tiemann of Spokane; three grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Francis Harris.

Marjory Hansen-Miller
A celebration of life was held for Marjory Hansen-Miller, who died Jan. 28, 2006, at the age of 88.
Mrs. Hansen-Miller was born April 25, 1917, to Richard Percival and Bernice (Johnson) McCall of Brisbane, Australia.
She graduated from Galileo High School in San Francisco, Calif., in 1933 and the University of California, Berkeley in 1938 with a bachelor of science degree in history. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She went on to receive her teaching certificate from San Francisco State College and taught fourth grade for 20 years.
During her first teaching job in Oakdale, Calif., she had a trip to Tahiti planned with another teacher. Her friend backed out but she went anyway. She was the life of the party on the ship going over. Whenever the ship's band saw her coming they would start playing the song, "Margie."
She married Paul Victor Hansen on Aug. 14, 1944. They met in Roswell, N.M., at a USO dance when she was a secretary to the base chaplain.
He preceded her in death in 1988.
She married Robert Chet Miller of East Sequim Bay in 1992. He preceded her in death in 1998.
She was always very proud of the fact that her grandfather, Richard Percival, came to America from Australia in 1906 after the Great San Francisco earthquake to help repair the city.
She always had a spirit of adventure.
When she bought her first car, she and her sister went back to Flint, Mich. on the train to pick it up. Even though she'd only had her driver's license a few months, she valiantly drove it across the U.S. to San Francisco, stopping at all the historic places on the route.
She was confident with a "can do" attitude her whole life.
Born and raised a city girl, she joined her husband, Paul, in a chicken raising adventure in Sonoma, California in 1945 after he came home from World War II. From there, they moved to a 1200-acre sheep and cattle ranch in Oakland, Ore. She was a modern day pioneer woman with a sense of exploration. In 1962 their ranch house burned to the ground but they rebuilt over the ashes.
She was an avid gardener who always loved growing flowers, especially roses.
They ?retired" from ranching to a 200-acre tree farm in Brookings, Ore., where they built their own cedar log home and reforested the land with thousands of trees.
She always said she was very blessed by having two wonderful husbands and four beautiful children.
Survivors include her four children: Paul Hansen Jr. and wife Deborah Keeting Hansen of Sequim, Laurey Hansen-Carl and partner Sara Helehan of Port Angeles, Victor Hansen and wife Karen Shlom Hansen of Eugene, Ore., and Linnea Hansen of Brookings, Ore.; sister Lorraine Nichol of Windsor, Calif.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Harry L. Nagode
A service will be held in Columbus, Ohio, for former Sequim resident Harry L. Nagode, who died Jan. 31 at the age of 94.
Mr. Nagode was born Oct. 17, 1911, near Baker, Mont., to Joseph and Louise (Golub) Nagode.
He was a civilian worker at Puget Sound Naval Yard during and after World War II.
He married Ruth Bair in Columbus, Mont., in February of 1933.
He farmed, ranched, and mined in Montana in his youth.
He also worked at Fort Peck Dam, Mont., then at Puget Sound Naval Yard in Washington and back to Montana to run a farm/ranch for 23 years.
He retired in 1973 and traveled for two years.
He built a retirement home in Sequim, where he lived until 1997, when he moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be near his son, Larry.
He loved fishing, crabbing, duplicate bridge, golf, reading and traveling.
He was the last of his generation of Nagodes.
He is survived by his children, Clint, Larry and Lois; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1987.


Esther O. Nelson
A service will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., for Sequim resident Esther O. Nelson, who died Jan. 28, 2006, at the age of 97.
Mrs. Nelson was born Oct. 27, 1908, in Jud, N.D., to Edward and Bertha (Krueger) Barnick.
She married Walter S. Nelson on Jan. 19, 1939, in Minneapolis. He preceded her in death in April of 1993.
A waitress for 30 years, she lived most of her life in St. Louis Park, Minn.
She loved dancing, doing needlework, playing cards and cooking.
She was a member of St. Luke?s Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Edward and Sharon Nelson of Manassas, Va.; daughter and son-in-law Janice and Greg Moo of Sequim; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.


Richard Schwab

He was born June 18, 1921.
He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
He transferred to Douglas Aire at Huntington Beach after the war, working for Douglas for 32 years, until his retirement.
He married Ruth Scott in 1941.
They moved to Sequim in 1980 from Culver City, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a brother; two sisters; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his son.


Fredericka ?Freddy? Smith-Barron
A service was held for Sequim resident Fredericka ?Freddy? Smith-Barron, who died Jan. 28, 2006, at the age of 75.
Mrs. Smith-Barron was born Aug. 7, 1930, in Baltimore, Md., to Frederick Wharton and Virginia (Kurtz) Fuller.
She married William McFee Smith on Aug. 20,1949. He preceded her in death in November of 1992.
She married Roy Barron in Port Angeles on Dec. 13, 1997.
Although she was a homemaker, she worked as a keypunch operator.
She lived in Jarretsville, Md., York, Pa., Camp Hill, Pa., Cheyenne, Wyo., Littleton, Colo., Olympia, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Port Angeles.
She enjoyed being a mom and helping others.
Other hobbies included jeeping, camping, collecting rocks, bowling and golf. She was a member of the Peninsula Golf Club.
She is survived by her husband, Roy Barron of Sequim; daughters Sandra Thomas of Boulder City, Nev., and Sheri Webb of Port Angeles; and two grandchildren.
Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, C. Kurtz Fuller.

Michael John Walker
A service was held for Sequim resident Michael John Walker, who died Jan. 31, 2006, at the age of 65.
Mr. Walker was born Nov. 18, 1940, in Big Stone Graceville, Minn., to Melvin G. and Evelyn Ella (Klicker) Walker.
He was married to Donna Maves in LaJolla, Calif., in September of 1964. They divorced in 1978.
He married Arline Marie Adams in Vancouver, Wash., on Aug. 2,1979.
He joined the Navy in 1959, serving as a radioman until 1963.
His occupations included being an insurance salesman for Lutherans, working for Brillware as a cabinet maker, and working in sales for Spotrails/FSI.
His places of residence included Kirkland, Vancouver, Denver, Colo., and Bothell.
He was happiest being with his wife and children. He also had a special close relationship with his brother, Jerry.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church and bowling, golf, and pool clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Arline Walker; sons Kenneth Meyer and Paul Walker; daughters Diane Keesee, Dawn Wilcox and Medine Meyer; brothers Jerry Walker, Allen Walker and Robert Walker; sister Jody Boyles; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jack Newton Pittis
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Vern Burton Memorial Community Gym, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles, for Port Angeles City Councilman Jack N. Pittis.
He died Feb. 3, 2006, at the age of 59. Cause of death is pending.
He was born April 23, 1946, in Seattle to William Lambert and Helen Pauline (Van Iderstine) Pittis.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Washington State University.
He was a civil engineer for the Seattle Engineering Department for the city of Seattle from 1969-1976 and a city engineer for the city of Mount Vernon from 1976-1980.
He was director of public works for the city of Port Angeles from 1980-1999 and interim city manager for the city of Port Angeles from July 1999-Aug. 1999.
A devoted family man, he loved to work around the house and yard. His favorite hobby was carving on different woods, which he did for family and friends.
Besides being a member of the Port Angeles City Council, he also held or had held a number of positions: regional director on the American Public Works Association; National Board Member of Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board; member of the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board; Port Angeles Planning Commission; past president of American Public Works Association (Washington Chapter); member of American Water Works Association; WEF; Association of Washington Cities; Department of Ecology; Department of Community Development; Port Angeles Real Estate Commission; and Clallam Transit Board.
He received many awards, including the ?Top Ten Public Works Leaders of the Year? in 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Penny A. Pittis; daughters and son-in-law Bonnie Jean Pittis of Port Angeles, Amber Lynn and Walt Mozingo, and Courtney Heleana Pittis and her fiancé Brad Larson; brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Julie Pittis; and four grandchildren.

Rose (Sofie) Beham
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at Lewis Funeral Chapel, 5303 Kitsap Way, Bremerton, for former Sequim resident Rose (Sofie) Beham.
Mrs. Beham died Feb. 5, 2006, at the age of 92.
She was born Jan. 10, 1914, in Sequim to George and Christina (Scaringi) Sofie.
She attended Sequim High School and graduated in 1932.
She married Merrill D. Beham in Seattle, on June 15, 1935.
Mrs. Beham was a homemaker while being very active in fraternal organizations, volunteering and care giving.
She was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Bremerton Post No. 239 Ladies Auxiliary and Reliance Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She was a Washington state department president of Veterans Foreign Wars in 1958, and a Worthy Matron of Reliance Chapter Order of Eastern Star in 1983. She was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Order of Eastern Star.
She was the Sequim Irrigation Festival queen in 1925 and was the oldest surviving queen to date.
The Sofie family settled on Palo Alto Road in Sequim in 1883. The family home built in 1900 is still occupied on the family farm.
She took great pride in her home, taking care of her roses and tending to her yard and garden. She also provided long- and short-term care for several close and extended family members over the years.
She is survived by her son Richard and his wife Earlene of Issaquah; sisters Nathalie Anguili of Arkansas and Carmen Laine of Bremerton; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill.

Kenneth Andrew Alstrup
No service was reported for Sequim resident Kenneth Andrew Alstrup, who died Feb. 2, 2006, at the age of 61.
Mr. Alstrup was born in Highland Park, N.J. on Dec. 20, 1944.
He married (Joann) Andrea Horvath in 1967.
He was active in the Boy Scouts as a Scout and leader in his son?s troop; and with his daughter in Indian Princesses. He also coached soccer in North Brunswick, N.J.
He was a former elder in the Bayard St. Presbyterian Church, New Brunswick, N.J. He was president of the Bayard Street Adult Group for many years.
His love of growing roses ranked almost as high as his love of bicycling. His numerous rose gardens in New Jersey were enjoyed by many, but most of all by his wife. He achieved his goal of a pannier bicycle trip in Provence upon his retirement. He shared his travelogues of his worldwide trips with those he loved.
Collecting model trains was a passion, but his real joy was in designing and building the layouts.
His carpentry skills were welcomed by Habitat for Humanity.
He recently moved from Hillsborough, N.J., to Sequim.
He retired from Marlite Corp. in 2002 after 26 years of service.
He is survived by his wife (Joann) Andrea Horvath; son Todd Andrew of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Megan Joann of Santa Monica, Calif.; brother Thomas of Denver, Colo.; sisters Diane Robbins of Media, Penn.; and Nancy Briggs of Littleton, Colo.; mother-in-law Joan Horvath; brothers- and sisters-in-law; and 15 nephews and nieces.

Marjory Hansen-Miller
A celebration of life was held for Marjory Hansen-Miller, who died Jan. 28, 2006, at the age of 88.
Mrs. Hansen-Miller was born April 25, 1917, to Richard Percival and Bernice (Johnson) McCall of Brisbane, Australia.
She graduated from Galileo High School in San Francisco, Calif., in 1933 and the University of California, Berkeley in 1938 with a bachelor of science degree in history. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She went on to receive her teaching certificate from San Francisco State College and taught fourth grade for 20 years.
She married Paul Victor Hansen on Aug. 14, 1944. They met in Roswell, N.M., at a USO dance when she was a secretary to the base chaplain. He preceded her in death in 1988.
She married Robert Chet Miller of East Sequim Bay in 1992. He preceded her in death in 1998.
She always had a spirit of adventure, driving her first car from Michigan to California having had her license for only a few months.
She was confident with a "can do" attitude her whole life. She and her husband Paul raised chickens in Sonoma, Calif. From there, they moved to a 1200-acre sheep and cattle ranch in Oakland, Ore. She was a modern day pioneer woman with a sense of exploration.
She was an avid gardener who always loved growing flowers, especially roses. They ?retired" from ranching to a 200-acre tree farm in Brookings, Ore., where they built their own cedar log home and reforested the land with thousands of trees.
She always said she was very blessed by having two wonderful husbands and four beautiful children.
Survivors include her four children: Paul Hansen Jr. and wife Deborah Keeting Hansen of Sequim, Laurey Hansen-Carl and partner Sara Helehan of Port Angeles, Victor Hansen and wife Karen Shlom Hansen of Eugene, Ore., and Linnea Hansen of Brookings, Ore.; sister Lorraine Nichol of Windsor, Calif.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Harry L. Nagode
A service will be held in Columbus, Ohio, for former Sequim resident Harry L. Nagode, who died Jan. 31 at the age of 94.
Mr. Nagode was born Oct. 17, 1911, near Baker, Mont., to Joseph and Louise (Golub) Nagode.
He was a civilian worker at Puget Sound Naval Yard during and after World War II.
He married Ruth Bair in Columbus, Mont., in February of 1933.
He farmed, ranched, and mined in Montana in his youth.
He also worked at Fort Peck Dam, Mont., then at Puget Sound Naval Yard in Washington and back to Montana to run a farm/ranch for 23 years.
He retired in 1973 and traveled for two years.
He built a retirement home in Sequim, where he lived until 1997, when he moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be near his son, Larry.
He loved fishing, crabbing, duplicate bridge, golf, reading and traveling.
He was the last of his generation of Nagodes.
He is survived by his children, Clint, Larry and Lois; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1987.


Esther O. Nelson
A service will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., for Sequim resident Esther O. Nelson, who died Jan. 28, 2006, at the age of 97.
Mrs. Nelson was born Oct. 27, 1908, in Jud, N.D., to Edward and Bertha (Krueger) Barnick.

Larry K. Ballard
No service has been reported for Larry K. Ballard, who died Feb. 5, 2006, at the age of 93.
A resident of Colonial Heights, Va., he was living in Washington state to be with his son at the time of his death.
He was born Feb. 15, 1912, in Palmyra, N.C., to Joseph and Byra Ballard.
The family moved to Hopewell, Va., in 1924.
In 1934, he served in the CCC, helping to build Lake Sherando, a major recreational park in Waynesboro, Va. He worked at a local factory, now known as Continental Can. He also worked for the federal government at Fort Lee.
He was a member of the Virginia National Guard, Hopewell Rifles, Co. E, Infantry in 1931 until called up for active duty during World War II in 1944.
During the war, he met and married Beryl Atkins of Bristol, England, in 1945.
He was a career Army sergeant who served all over Germany after the war. He also was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He retired in 1964 from service and returned to Colonial Heights, where he again worked for civil service until final retirement.
He loved to sing and act. He was in minstrel shows during his youth and was a founding member of a senior singing group in Hopewell, Va., that is still in existence today.
He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Sequim.
He is survived by his sons, Russell Ballard of Sequim and Steve Ballard of Dover, Del.; and a granddaughter.
The last survivor of his family, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beryl; brothers Sam, Joe, and Linwood Ballard; and sister Mildred Goodwin.

Tom Coffel
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Tom Coffel, who died Jan. 22, 2006, at the age of 75.
He was born Nov. 3, 1930, in Edmonds.
At the age of 14, he traveled with his family to Alaska. They fell in love with Alaska?s rustic beauty and made Anchorage their home.
He served his plumber?s apprenticeship under his father, founder of OK Heating and Plumbing in Anchorage. Mr. Coffel realized the potential Alaska provided and developed OK Heating and Plumbing into a major mechanical and contracting firm in Alaska.
While building his business he mentored many young apprentices. His knowledge of the trade and his work ethics helped to develop the young men into some of the best contractors in Alaska. After 12 years, he decided to semi-retire and moved to Sequim.
He opened Tom?s Plumbing and Heating, and then realized a longtime dream by opening a tavern, ?The Lost Alaskan,? followed by the purchase of The Sundowner Motel.
Restoring classic cars was a passion he shared with his father and it gave him the opportunity to mentor again. He passed the love of his hobby onto his grandson, Travis, along with other young men in the Sequim area.
He is survived by his wife Peggy Coffel; sons and daughters-in-law David and Deborah Coffel, Steve and Donna Coffel, and Brad Coffel; daughters Sheri Tibadaeu, Cecelia Szymanski and Dede Juliussen; son-in-law Collin Szymanski; sister Billie Ann Specht; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.


Marie Gebhardt
A service has been held for Marie Gebhardt, who died Feb. 7, 2006, at the age of 88.
She was born May 13, 1917, in Chehalis to Walter and Elsie (Dreisig) Deggler.
She was a 1934 graduate of Centralia High School
She married William Gebhardt in Centralia on Jan. 7, 1937.
She worked as a horticulturist in her apple orchard in Washington state for 20 years. She also worked as a bank teller and also in the Navy yard.
She was a member of the Sequim Valley Grange, and she loved to garden. She also loved cooking, knitting and needlework.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Joyce and John Davis; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Rodney Ransom Keith Gross
No service was reported for Port Angeles resident Rodney Ransom Keith Gross, who died Feb. 12, 2006, at the age of 86.
Mr. Gross was born May 22, 1919, in Minot, N.D., to G.L. and Clara Alice (Tomlin) Gross.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II in Great Britain.
He married Lillian Boyd on Sept. 23, 1943, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She preceded him in death on April 5, 2005.
He was a plant manager for a plastic bag manufacturing company in Minnesota. He also was a veterans service officer in Minot for 20 years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a member of American Legion and of Disabled American Veterans, and a Mason.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Cheryl and Jack Kohan of Alexandria, Minn., Valerie Gross of Port Angeles, and Joan and Ken Kadlec of Mount Vernon; brother Ken Gross of Portland, Ore.; sister Mayme Henderson of Maples, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Harold J. ?Randy? Randolph
Services will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Harold J. ?Randy? Randolph, who died Jan. 30, 2006, at the age of 95.
He was born Dec. 28, 1910, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Harry L. and Vina (Boomgaarden) Randolph.
His mother died when he was 4. From ages 13-18, he helped his father farm 650 acres with 40 head of horses, without electricity or running water. He helped his father with farm chores before and after school.
He graduated from both grammar and high school in Rock Rapids.
His father died in December 1928.
Mr. Randolph did road surveying and bridge construction during summers to pay college expenses. He graduated from Iowa State University at Ames with a bachelor of science degree in general engineering in 1933. He belonged to Sigma Chi fraternity.
During the Depression, he worked for the Continental Illinois National Bank & Trust in Chicago a few months before leaving to take an engineering sales training course with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pa.
He remained with Westinghouse for seven years, working in industrial sales and service in upper New York state. He then worked for S & C Electric Co. in Chicago for five years, manufacturers of high voltage and military items inn the wartime radar field. He then worked for five years for J.J. Costello Co. of Boston, electrical manufacturing agents.
In 1940, he married Ruth Stone of Roanoke, Va. The couple had two daughters, Trena and Ann. The marriage ended in divorce in 1962.
In 1949, he founded Randolph Industries, serving Southern California, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona and providing electrical and electronic field services for technical manufacturers. The company grew to 30 employees, with headquarters in El Monte, Calif. He sold the business to its employees in 1969 and retired.
He married June E. ?Betty? Parker in North Hollywood in 1963.
They purchased a 267-acre farm in northern New Hampshire of mostly timber. They developed a Christmas tree farm of 28,000 trees and practiced organic farming.
They then moved to Gardiner for seven years where he was involved in community affairs, and later to Sequim where he was active for 12 years in Master Gardeners and Over the Hill walking club. He also volunteered for the Sequim Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Randolph is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Trena and Robert L. Taylor Sr. of Cary, N.C., and Ann and Clive Rogers of Stroud, Glos, England; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.


Marvin Leroy Swanberg
A service will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Marvin Leroy Swanberg, who died Feb. 7, 2006, at the age of 94.
He was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Grove City, Minn., to Peter Mons and Minnie Mae (Paulson) Swanberg.
He married Lee Olson on April 7, 1934, in Howard Lake, Minn. She preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 2005.
He attended Dunwood Technical College to become an electrician.
He retired from the Bremerton Naval Shipyard electrical division.
He lived for many years in Watauga Beach and Yuma, Ariz., before moving to Sequim.
He was a very creative woodworker, with a patent pending in the energy field. He also was a 32nd degree mason.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Retired Federal Employees and Electrical Workers Union.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Kit and Teri Swanberg of Sequim; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He married Ruth Lovejoy Harwell on Feb. 21, 1962, in Berkeley, Calif. She preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2005.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
He worked as a manufacturer, and as a fiscal administrator of educational and charitable institutions.
Besides Sequim and Berkeley, Calif., he also lived in Oakland and Santa Monica, Calif.
He was a member of St. Luke?s Episcopal Church in Sequim and Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.

He was born Nov. 22, 1911, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Resia Mae Koontz
A service will be held at noon Feb. 22 at Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim, for Sequim resident Resia Mae Koontz, who died Feb. 15, 2006, at the age of 78. A reception follows the service.
Mrs. Koontz was born July 11, 1927, in Colson, Ky., to Dennis F. and Lola Everidge Blair.
She grew up at the Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Ky.
She married Owen L. Koontz on Aug. 16, 1960.
After completing business training she became part of a secretary pool. She worked up to an executive secretary position serving the United States Air Force in a civilian capacity.
She also lived in Ohio and California and retired in Washington.
She lovingly cared for her husband and family and kept a beautiful home. She always enjoyed working with people.
She was active in her church, most recently at Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church and previously at First Presbyterian Church at Port Angeles.
She is survived by her husband, Owen L. Koontz, of Sequim; daughters and sons-in-law Darlene K. and David P. Doak, of San Jose, Calif., and Debra Lee Koontz and Don M. O?Connell, of Renton; brothers and sisters-in-law William H. and Hazel Blair, of Lexington, Ky., Hager and Ruth Blair, of Englewood, Fla., and Don and Dan Blair; sister and brother-in-law Gertrude and Gerald Pasley, of Somerset, Ky.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her brother Hank.


Viola Wakefield
A graveside service will be held at Sequim View Cemetery at noon Feb. 25 for Viola Wakefield, who died Feb. 18, 2006, at the age of 96.
Mrs. Wakefield was born Oct. 5, 1909, in Albuquerque, N.M.
She married Jack Howard Wakefield in 1952. He preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1998.
She moved from Sequim to the Ontario, Ore.-Payette, Idaho, area in 1999.

Lloyd H. Starr
A celebration of life will be held Feb. 25 for Sequim resident Lloyd H. Starr, who died Feb. 18, 2006.
His wooden scale models of trucks and construction equipment will be on display from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at 251 S. Fifth Ave., Room 108.
Mr. Starr was born in 1937 in Winthrop to Clifford H. and Eula Starr.
He grew up in Spokane.
He moved to Sequim in 1972 and worked as a barber. He converted the old Carlsborg post office into his shop.
Building wooden scale models of trucks and construction equipment was his passion.
He is survived by his sisters, Genaveve Starr, of Sequim, Sonja Hall, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Judith Dinsmore, of Scappose, Ore.


Dave A. Watson

Marie Gebhardt
A service has been held for Marie Gebhardt, who died Feb. 7, 2006, at the age of 88.
She was born May 13, 1917, in Chehalis to Walter and Elsie (Dreisig) Deggler.
She was a 1934 graduate of Centralia High School.
She married William Gebhardt in Centralia on Jan. 7, 1937.
She worked as a horticulturist in her apple orchard in Washington state for 20 years. She also worked as a bank teller and also in the Navy yard.
She was a member of the Sequim Valley Grange, and she loved to garden. She also loved cooking, knitting and needlework.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Joyce and John Davis; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Rodney Ransom Keith Gross
No service has reported for Port Angeles resident Rodney Ransom Keith Gross, who died Feb. 12, 2006, at the age of 86.
He was born May 22, 1919, in Minot, N.D., to G.L. and Clara Alice (Tomlin) Gross.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II in Great Britain.
He married Lillian Boyd on Sept. 23, 1943, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She preceded him in death on April 5, 2005.
Mr. Gross was a plant manager for a plastic bag manufacturing company in Minnesota. He also was a veterans? service officer in Minot for 20 years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a member of American Legion and of Disabled American Veterans, and a Mason.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Cheryl and Jack Kohan, of Alexandria, Minn., Valerie Gross, of Port Angeles, and Joan and Ken Kadlec, of Mount Vernon; brother Ken Gross, of Portland, Ore.; sister Mayme Henderson, of Maples, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Harold J. ?Randy? Randolph
A service will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Harold J. ?Randy? Randolph, who died Jan. 30, 2006, at the age of 95.
He was born Dec. 28, 1910, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Harry L. and Vina (Boomgaarden) Randolph.
His mother died when he was 4. From ages 13-18, he helped his father farm 650 acres with 40 head of horses, without electricity or running water. He helped his father with farm chores before and after school. He graduated from both grammar and high school in Rock Rapids.
His father died in December 1928.
Mr. Randolph did road surveying and bridge construction during summers to pay college expenses. He graduated from Iowa State University at Ames with a bachelor of science degree in general engineering in 1933. He belonged to Sigma Chi fraternity.
During the Depression, he worked for the Continental Illinois National Bank & Trust in Chicago a few months before leaving to take an engineering sales training course with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pa.
He remained with Westinghouse for seven years, working in industrial sales and service in upper New York state. He then worked for S & C Electric Co. in Chicago for five years, manufacturers of high voltage and military items in the wartime radar field. He then worked for five years for J.J. Costello Co. of Boston, electrical manufacturing agents.
In 1940, he married Ruth Stone of Roanoke, Va. The couple had two daughters, Trena and Ann. The marriage ended in divorce in 1962.
In 1949, he founded Randolph Industries, serving Southern California, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona and providing electrical and electronic field services for technical manufacturers. The company grew to 30 employees, with headquarters in El Monte, Calif. He sold the business to its employees in 1969 and retired.
He married June E. ?Betty? Parker in North Hollywood in 1963. They purchased a 267-acre farm in northern New Hampshire of mostly timber. They developed a Christmas tree farm of 28,000 trees and practiced organic farming.
They then moved to Gardiner for seven years where he was involved in community affairs, and later to Sequim where he was active for 12 years in Master Gardeners and Over the Hill walking club. He also volunteered for the Sequim Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Randolph is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Trena and Robert L. Taylor Sr., of Cary, N.C., and Ann and Clive Rogers, of Stroud, Glos, England; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.


Marvin Leroy Swanberg
A service will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Marvin Leroy Swanberg, who died Feb. 7, 2006, at the age of 94.
He was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Grove City, Minn., to Peter Mons and Minnie Mae (Paulson) Swanberg.
He married Lee Olson on April 7, 1934, in Howard Lake, Minn. She preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 2005.
Mr. Swanberg attended Dunwood Technical College to become an electrician.
He retired from the Bremerton Naval Shipyard electrical division.
He lived for many years in Watauga Beach and Yuma, Ariz., before moving to Sequim.
He was a very creative woodworker, with a patent pending in the energy field. He also was a 32nd degree mason.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Retired Federal Employees and Electrical Workers Union.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Kit and Teri Swanberg, of Sequim; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

George W. Bretches
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident George W. Bretches, who died Feb. 15, 2006, at the age of 87.
He was born Aug. 15, 1918, in Elk City, Kans., to George Wesley and Hattie Pearl (Pitman) Bretches.
He married Barbara E. MacNamarra in Port Angeles on Dec. 7, 1941.
He lived in Portland, Ore., from 1923 until he entered the United States Army in 1938.
He served from December 1938 to December 1941 at Fort Worden, Port Townsend; and from April 1944 to October 1945, at Camp Roberts, Calif., and in the Philippines. He received the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star. He was a combat infantryman-staff sergeant.
He worked for the Fiberboard Mill in Port Angeles, then transferred to the Portland Fiberboard Mill and returned to Port Angeles in 1942. Upon his return, he worked for Sound Construction building gun emplacements at Salt Creek.
After his Army service, he returned to work at Fiberboard in 1945. In 1959, he was an owner/operator for Mayflower. He worked for the state highway department from1962-1980. He also worked as a Blue Top cab diver and in the Peninsula Daily News circulation department.
He enjoyed gardening, dancing at the Eagles and Elks clubs and reading western novels.
He loved big trucks and his little dogs.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara E. Bretches, of Port Angeles; son and daughter-in-law Guy W. and Colleen Bretches, of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Alice and Carl Alexander, of Port Angeles, and the Rev. Patty Edwards and the Rev. Eddy Edwards, of Kerrville, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother Calvin Bretches and sisters Irene, Pearl and Dorothy Bretches.

Lucille Virginia Butler

She was born Oct. 17, 1919, in Hampden, N.D., to Kenneth B. and Myrtle (Sackenreuter) Williams.
When she was 2 years old, the family moved to Bellingham, where she graduated from Bellingham High School.
She married Virgil O. Butler on Dec. 25, 1939. He was a schoolteacher and administrator. After their marriage, they lived in Rockford, Napavine and Quilcene before settling in Port Angeles in 1957.
A homemaker, Mrs. Butler was active in her church, the First Presbyterian Church of Port Angeles.
She was a charter member of both Monday Musicale and the Olympic Dahlia Society.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Darold Seed, of Port Angeles, and Elaine and Mike Shields, of Palmer, Alaska; brother Harold ?Bud? Williams of Vancouver, Wash.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Reginald and Douglas and sister Lois.

Robert H. Edens Jr.
A service has been held for Sequim resident Robert H. Edens Jr., who died Feb. 14, 2006, at the age of 60.
He was born July 6, 1945, in Joplin, Mo., to Peggy Lou (Groom) and Robert Henry Edens Sr.
He married Pamela Rae South in Bell, Calif., on July 9, 1966.
He earned a bachelor of science degree from Humboldt University and a master of science degree from Utah State University.
He worked for 27 years with the United States Fish & Wildlife Service, Forest Service and National Park Service in California, Utah, South Dakota, New Mexico and Washington state.
He loved the outdoors, birdwatching, backpacking, fishing and hunting.
He was a member of Sequim Bible Church.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Edens, of Sequim; daughters Leslie Copeland, of Sequim, Tracy Mancuso, of Medford, Ore., and Christy Russell, of Frisco, Calif.; brothers Richard Edens, of Breckenridge, Colo., Marvin Edens, of Sacramento, Calif., Mark Edens, of Fullerton, Calif., and Kevin Edens, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one grandson.

Elizabeth Ann Jenkins
A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Elizabeth Ann Jenkins, who died Feb. 16, 2006, at the age of 82.
She was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Trenton, Mo., to Luis and Lelia (Wheeldon) Justus.
She married Dave Kenneth Jenkins in Des Moines, Iowa, on Feb. 12, 1941. He preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 1998.
She retired after 20 years as a keypunch operator from Hughes Aircraft Co.
She lived in Hartford, Iowa; Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Hillsboro, Ore.; and Belton, Mo. before she moved to Port Angeles in 1992.
Mrs. Jenkins was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Angeles, Beta Sigma Phi and the Gladys Billings Moonchildren?s Hospital Guild.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Edith Jenkins, of Carlisle, Iowa; daughters and sons-in-law Peggy and Larry Larson, of Port Angeles, Nancy and Russell Sweazey, of Phelan, Calif., and Judy and Dennis Richards, of Bonney Lake; brother Jim Justus, of Oak Harbor; sisters Mary Rheimanschneider, of Lake Annette, Mo., and Virginia King, of Minden, Nev.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Luis Justus, Bill Justus, George Justus and Robert Justus.

Betty Lou Kanieski
A service has been held for Betty Lou Kanieski, who died Feb. 13, 2006, at the age of 83.
She was born Oct. 14, 1922, in South Bend, Ind., to Clyde Ely and Luella Fay (Grise) Myers.
She married Arthur Reasor in November of 1942 in South Bend. They moved from South Bend to Madera, Calif.
He preceded her in death in 1971 and she relocated to San Jose, Calif., to be close to family.
She married Henry C. Kanieski in 1975. They lived in Los Gatos, Calif., until moving to Sequim in 1992 to be close to her daughter and family.
Mrs. Kanieski worked as an operating room technician in Madera and San Jose, Calif.
She was a member of the Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Christian Women?s Club and the Newcomers Club.
She loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. She was a loving, extremely thoughtful and caring person.
She is survived by her husband, Henry, currently residing at the Washington State Veterans Home in Retsil; son Gary Reasor, of Port Angeles; brother Richard Myers, of South Bend; twin sister B. Jane Goff, of San Mateo; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
Besides her husband Arthur Reasor, she was preceded in death by brother John Myers and sisters Claire Alice Myers and Kathleen Callsen.

Karl H. Ortlinghaus

He was born May 15, 1927, in Soest, Germany, to Carl and Esther (Kahan) Ortlinghaus.
He married Ruth M. Zimmerman in Kassel, Germany, on Dec. 31, 1948.
He spent four years in apprentice schooling as a tool and die maker. He was a tool and die maker and precision inspector in Germany, California, Missouri, Florida and Washington.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ortlinghaus, of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Ralph and Lori Ortlinghaus, of Enumclaw; daughter and son-in-law Linda and Jack Harvey; brother and sister-in-law Hans-Joach and Rosemarie Ortlinghaus, of Colone, Germany; and four grandchildren.

Valjean Lawrence "Gene" Strickland, 65, a winter visitor of Apache
Junction, Ariz., died February 4, 2006.
Mr. Strickland was a jewelry store owner born in Port Angeles to Earl and Bessie Strickland.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Anne (Krafsky) Strickland; daughters Lori Elliott and Lisa Berry; step-daughters Tamara Conger, Tricia Burk and Larissa Burk; brother, Bill and Patricia Strickland; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Dwaine Urquhart; and many grandchildren; aunts; uncles; and cousins.
He also raised and loved many children throughout his lifetime.

Johnnie ?J.T.? Ray Benhart Thompson
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. April 1 at Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760, 169 E. Washington St., Sequim, for Johnnie ?J.T.? Ray Benhart Thompson.
A celebration of life will follow at the home of his brother, Jerry Thompson, 1011 W. Spruce Court, Sequim.
Mr. Thompson died March 22, 2006, at the age of 62.
He was born June 26, 1943, in Anamosa, Iowa, to Henry and Jeannette (Gill) Benhart.
He served in the United States Army from 1960-69. He was stationed first in Fort Riley, Kans., and then went on to serve overseas in both Korea and Vietnam.
He married Dinh Kim Hoang on Aug. 25, 1968, in Saigon, Vietnam. They returned to Sequim in August 1969 and have resided here ever since.
Upon returning to Sequim, he worked in the construction industry and started his own business, A-1 Construction, in 1976.
In 1993, he and his brother Jerry and their wives purchased the Sundown Saloon.
Mr. Thompson was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing and spending time with his four grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Kim of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Denny and Kelli Thompson of Spokane; daughter and son-in-law Diana and Chris Young of Sequim; brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Laura Thompson of Sequim; sisters and brothers-in-law Bonnie Rae Thompson of Port Angeles; Terry and James Hammonds of Sequim; and also in California and Texas; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
