The only one of 10 children to attend college, he graduated with a teaching certificate from Bellingham Normal School, now Western Washington University, in 1928.
He once confided he loved playing basketball as much as pursuing his studies.
A Bellingham newspaper article referred to him as “one of the shining lights” of the Viking basketball squad.

A school administration who loved the classroom, it was not uncommon for him to schedule himself to teach a term of algebra or general science each year.

Never idle for long, between trips he worked in a variety of jobs in Sequim well into his 70s, including a stint at the Sequim Post Office.
