Gladys M. Brinkman
A memorial service for Port Angeles resident Gladys M. Brinkman will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Jon Fodge will preside.
Mrs. Brinkman died April 19, 2008, at the age of 84.
She was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Terry, Mont., to Gotlieb and Katherine Morast Becker.
She married Albert Brinkman on June 13, 1942, in Yakima. He preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2006.
Mrs. Brinkman retired after working at Olympic Memorial Hospital in Port Angeles for 25 years.
She was an avid camper and grandmother. She was a member of the Moose and Eagles lodges.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Joe S. and Louise Brinkman of Puyallup, Michael P. Brinkman of Shelton and Jerry D. Brinkman of Port Angeles; daughter Patsy S. Brinkman of Bellevue; brothers Allen Becker of Puyallup, Jimmy Becker of Richland and Eddie Becker of Sunnyside; sister Violet Hicks of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother Rinehold Becker and sisters Cleda Bacon and Irene Fouty.

Ronald Willis Ellsworth Sr.
A memorial service for Port Angeles resident Ronald Willis Ellsworth Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Lighthouse Christian Center in Port Angeles.
The Revs. Eldon Officer, Art Morlin, Dick Rutledge and Clarence Ellsworth, Mr. Ellsworth’s brother, will preside. A reception follows the service at the church.
Mr. Ellsworth died April 29, 2008, of congestive heart failure at the age of 67.
He was born June 7, 1940, in Port Angeles, to Bernard W. and Leola May Polland Ellsworth.
He married Elaine Joyce Warren on June 18, 1960, in Port Angeles. She preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 2005.
He served in the United States Navy.
Mr. Ellsworth was a deputy sheriff for Clallam County, a shake bolt cutter and log truck driver. He worked at Crown Zellerbach Mill.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was a member of Lighthouse Christian Center, Assembly of God, Moose Lodge and Teamsters Union.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Ronald Ellsworth Jr. of Port Angeles, Andrew and Elizabeth Nelson-Ellsworth, and Darin and Brandi Ellsworth; brothers Clarence Ellsworth of Federal Way and Ralph Ellsworth of Port Angeles; sister Sharon Parkhurst of Port Angeles; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by twin infant daughters Mary and Theresa Ellsworth and sister Shirley Pigors.

Claude D. Bentz Jr.
A memorial service for
Sequim resident Claude D. Bentz Jr. will be held at noon, Saturday, May 10, at Eastern Hills Community Church, 81 Savannah Lane, Sequim.
Mr. Bentz died April 30, 2008, at the age of 70 of cancer.
He was born Dec. 14, 1937, in Snohomish, to Claude DeWitt and Effie Hills Bentz.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1956-76.
He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was stationed in Asia, Arkansas and Tennessee. He retired as a jet mechanic.
Mr. Bentz owned and operated Sequim Center Auto from 1976-88, then moved to South Carolina and Texas and returned to Sequim in 2005.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Sequim.
He married Kiyo Mabe in Okinawa, Japan. She died Nov. 17, 1988.
He married Peggy Lea Austin in Sequim on Sept. 14, 1990.
Survivors include his wife; sons Massayuki Bentz of Olympia and Claude D. Bentz III and David Bentz, both of Sequim; daughters Reiko Smith of Snohomish and Veronica Banks of Waco, Texas; stepsons Robert Larson of Lockhart, S.C., and Wyatt Hutchinson of Spartanburg, S.C.; stepdaughter Rose Thornton of Blacksburg, S.C.; brothers Dale Bentz of Monroe and Robert Bentz of Madisonville, Tenn.; sisters Clara Conover and Nina Sweet, both of Sequim; Reva Meyers of Port Angeles; and Cora Biernet of Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers James Bentz, John Bentz, Joe Bentz, Donald Bentz, Charles Bentz and Darryl Bentz and sisters Elsie Volker and Shirley Ann Bentz.
Olympic Cremation Association was in charge of arrangements.



Violet ‘Vi’ Bennett
A service has been held for former Sequim resident Violet “Vi” Bennett, who died April 10, 2008, in Billings, Mont., at the age of 86.
Born on the family farm in Grenora, N.D., on Sept. 6, 1921, she was the youngest of seven children of Oscar and Valborg Lundby. She graduated from Grenora High School.
She met and married Monte Dittman in Deer Lodge, Mont., where they lived until 1975 when he retired and they moved to Sequim. They enjoyed golf with a close group of friends in SunLand until his death in 1985.
An avid gardener, she grew many varieties of flowers.
Music was a part of her daily life since she was a child. In Sequim, she played the accordion for dances and at retirement homes and accompanied a singing group on the piano.
She was active in the Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school and served as an elder in Deer Lodge and played in the bell choir in Sequim for many years.
She also was an active member of the P.E.O. service sorority.
She married Henry “Hank” Bennett in 1987. In 2004, they moved to Billings, Mont., to be close to her daughter.
She is survived by her husband, Henry; son Lee Dittman of Portland, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Laura and Bob Rodriguez of Billings, Mont.; step-daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Bob Emory of Bend, Ore.; Edna and Mike Herron of Missoula, Mont.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband Monte Dittman; brothers and sisters-in-law Harold and Gladys; Bill and Ruby; Christian and Violet; Leif and Doris; and Roy and Mary; sister and brother-in-law Gladys and Arnold Christenson; son-in-law Tim Lacey; and niece Jean Paulson.
Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice of Billings.

Ralph Leonard Berger
A service has been held for Sequim resident Ralph Leonard Berger, who died April 28, 2008, at the age of 68.
He was born June 16, 1939, in Sequim, to Carl Leonard and Eva Mae Hicok.
Mr. Berger lived his entire life on the family dairy farm in Sequim.
His many interests included photography, reading science fiction, western music and collecting the odd and unusual. He never saw a garage or yard sale he didn’t like.
He was a longtime member of the Sequim Prairie Grange, Sequim Lodge, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lyle Berger.

John H. Bedinger
No service has been reported for Sequim resident John H. Bedinger, who died April 24, 2008, at the age of 86.
He was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Hendersonville, N.C., to Robert D. and Frances Browne Bedinger.
He received pilot training in the United States Navy between 1943-1945.
He married Elizabeth “Bette” Johnson on Jan. 1, 1950.
An engineer for the Boeing Airplane Company for 37 years, he worked on programs beginning with the B-17 and including the 707 and 747.
Mr. Bedinger finished his career in Japan on the 767 program.
He retired in 1981 to Sequim and Maui.
He enjoyed sailing, fishing, tennis and travel.
He is survived by his wife, Bette Bedinger of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Sarah Bedinger of Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Ken Kassenbrock of Fort Collins, Colo.; brother Lanier Bedinger of Fairfield, Calif.; and five grandchildren.



Fred H. Assumpcao
At his request, no service is planned for Port Angeles resident Fred H. Assumpcao, who died May 4, 2008, at the age of 78.
He was born April 4, 1930, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Charles and Frieda Hildebrandt Assumpcao.
He married Elizabeth Bollman on Jan. 27, 1956, at Old First Church in Somerville, N.J.
He served in the Medical Corps in the United States Army from 1953-1955 in Germany. He worked as an inspector for the Johns Manville Company.
He lived in New York, New Jersey, Texas, North Carolina and Washington.
He loved the ocean, animals and people and was known to be very compassionate, helping anyone who needed it.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Assumpcao of Port Angeles; son and daughter-in-law William and Diana Assumpcao of Port Angeles; and a grandson.
He was preceded in death by son Michael Assumpcao and brother Ralph Assumpcao.
