Get up and move!

Fifty-five percent of greater Sequim’s population is over 60 and only 3 percent of those choose to implement any type of exercise in their daily life. (U.S. Census 2010). Who cares if you die prematurely? I don’t!

Sequim has an exceptional community recreation center; for 26 years it has offered seniors the opportunity to forestall time’s erosion, or at least, be the best preserved in their box!

Movement is key to life. Life, like steel, unattended, will rust; turn to dust! If senior adults, me included, don’t get off our collective asses, we’ll just rot!

How many of us are or get depressed, have stress issues, have lost self-esteem? Hell, what worries me is dementia; I’ll not know I’m rotting. But we don’t have to accept; we can fight; quality of life is worth the effort.

Activity has been shown to help prevent heart disease and some site-specific cancers, as well as helping post-surgical recoveries, relieving joint and muscle complaints.

What do I have to do to get you to move? I’m 75 and I don’t give a damn which gym you use; just get off your behind and move! Walk a block at first, trust me — you’ll feel better.

Jan Richardson
