Pirates earn postseason accolades

Call it a reward for all that practicing.

Three Peninsula College players and men's coach Peter Stewart are recipients of postseason awards following the 2007-08 regular season.

Sophomore Clay Greenland was named the NWAACC North Division MVP and fellow second-year teammate Dominick Lozano was selected a first-team North Division all-star for the division champion men Pirates.

Sam Flett, a freshman from Wellpinit, was named to the NWAACC North Division second team.

In his sixth year coaching the Pirates, Stewart has taken a last-place team (3-23 in 2002-03) to three North Division titles and five consecutive NWAACC tournament appearances. Since that first season, the Pirates are 62-18 in conference play and 88-48 overall.

Greenland, a 6-foot-5 Kanab, Utah, native, led the Pirates with a 20.0 points-per-game average and 8.3 rebounds each contest. He also led the team with 34 blocks and 62 steals, playing in all 29 regular season games.

Lozano, a 5-foot-11 guard, shot 41.8-percent from the three-point line, knocking down 94 triples. He scored 17.8 points per game, had 70 assists, 37 steals and shot a team-best 78.9-percent from the free-throw line.

Flett, a 5-foot-6 guard, led the Pirates in scoring (13.8 points per game) and assists (91).

"This is a very deserving award for coach Stewart and his staff," said Rick Ross, P.C. athletic director. "His Pirates put together a remarkable run, winning six straight games in the final 14 days of conference play to steal the North Division championship right out from under Everett, Whatcom and Bellevue."
