Sequim High AD to take job in China

For Chris Olson, 30 years is enough.

Olson, Sequim High School’s athletic director since August 2002, is resigning his position at the school to take a high school job in China.

Olson was a 24-year-veteran of Sequim Middle School athletics and teaching before swapping athletic director positions with Mark Textor in 2002.

In February of this year, while at an international job fair, Olson spotted several intriguing positions abroad. After interviewing for four different jobs, Olson selected a position that will see him teach high school physical education and coach baseball in the world’s most populous country.

“Our kids are grown and gone, and it’s a chance to expand and travel,” Olson said last week. “We’ll keep our homes here.”

Olson came to the Sequim School District in 1978. As Sequim High athletic director, he managed schedules, budgets and other details for 16 teams.

Olson’s request for a two-year leave of absence was on the Sequim School District meeting agenda for April 21 — the board’s vote was not available at press time.
