Riders brave bad weekend weather for first 'Tour' race

More than 230 racers made the start of the first 2009 Tour De Dungeness bike race March 8.

Tricia Bailey of Seattle, ranked No. 3 by the Washington State Bicycle Association in 2008, took home top honors in the women's pro 1/2/3 division while Michelle Conrad took second and Mara Boursaw was third.

Bellevue's Ian Tubbs, a Tour De Dungeness race winner in 2008 and top-ranked rider by the association last year, won the men's category 1/2 division, followed by James Stangeland and Aaron Johnson.

Other winners include: Travis Venable, men's category 3; Logan Owen, men's category 4; Christina Solheim, women's category 4; and Greg Arden, men's masters division.

Riders are back at the Tour De Dungeness racecourse near the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge on March 22 for the second of the two-race 2009 series.

The course is 12 miles starting at the Voice of America Boulevard and ending at Kitchen-Dick Road.

Registration is on race day only beginning at 8 a.m. and closes 15 minutes before each category's race. Races start at 10 a.m. with men's category 3. Cost is $25 for Pro 1-2 categories and $20 for all other USA cycling-licensed categories. One-day USA cycling licenses are available for $10, for men's category 5 and women's category 4 only.
