Sequim wrestler takes

third at nationals

Summer Steenberg, a sophomore at Pacific University, placed third in the 130-pound weight class at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association's Women's Nationals in Hampton, Va., March 14.

Steenberg finished 3-2 in the round robin session, earning pins against Audra Creech of Auburn, Jen Brouillette of Colorado and Samantha Wong of Florida A&M. She then pinned Creech in the consolation final for third place.

With her top-three finish, Steenberg earns All-American status.

In the team standings, Pacific finished third out of the nine competing teams. Yakima Valley took the title with Simon Fraser third, San Jose State fourth and Mercer fifth.



Walkers take to Gardiner troll trail

The Olympic Peninsula Explorers Volkssport Club hosts a club walk in Gardiner on Saturday, March 28.

The walk is 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) or five kilometers (3.1 miles).

The walk includes observing, from public roads only, the Trolls carved into the buildings and fence posts of Troll Haven. Trails pass by a boat ramp and firehouse.

To register for the walk, meet at Wild Birds Unlimited Espresso, 275953 Highway 101, shortly before 9 a.m.

'Cedars' team takes hoops title

The 7 Cedars Casino basketball squad proved to be a good bet, winning the Port Angeles City Parks and Recreation Men's Adult Basketball League 2009 championship March 16.

Seven Cedars Casino topped Langston Professional Services 77-66 in the Purple Division championship, led by Kasey Ulin's 22 points and 16 points from Tony Burke. Art Green led Langston Professional Services with 21 points while teammate Greg Glasser added 17 points.



Volunteers needed for

Sequim-P.A. marathon

Organizers of this year's North Olympic Discovery Marathon are looking for helpers for the race weekend, slated for June 6-7.

Volunteer opportunities vary, from registration set-up and shirt/kit assembly to course set-up, course marshals, aid station helpers, finish line helpers, post-race clean-up and more.

Volunteers get a special race T-shirt and invitation to the Windermere Volunteer Thank You party/dinner.

Port Angeles hosts

dodgeball tourney

The Port Angeles Recreation Department is hosting Thunderballs Dodgeball, a dodgeball tournament for coed teams of adults 18 years and older on May 9.

Entry fee is $50.

Registration forms are available at the Vern Burton Community Center, 321 E. Fifth St. in Port Angeles.

Youth hoops tourney on tap

The Port Angeles Recreation Department is hosting the 13th-annual April Fools' Extravaganza basketball tournament, with divisions for boys' and girls' teams in the fifth grade through high school, on April 4 and 5.

Teams are guaranteed at least four games for their $225 entry fee.

Cody sinks ace at SkyRidge

Russ Cody of Port Angeles had his first career hole-in-one at SkyRidge Golf Course on March 13. Cody used a 5-wood from 176 yards on SkyRidge's fifth hole. Scott Corso witnessed the links feat.



SARC line dance class starts in April

The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center offers a line dance class beginning April 1. The class is on Monday and Wednesdays from 10:45-11:45 a.m.

Participants do not need a partner for this class. It includes how to move to the cha cha cha, mambo, waltz and more.

All levels are welcome. Participants are urged to wear tennis shoes or dance shoes and comfortable clothing. Drop-ins are welcome.

Sequim Run-Off

comes down in price

The price for the Sequim Run-Off 10k/two-mile race, slated for May 2, is down to $10 for 2009.

The event does not feature a T-shirt this year.

Staged at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse, the Run-Off is held in conjunction with the 114th annual Sequim Irrigation Festival.
