Mariner schedules available at Gazette

The Seattle Mariners' 2009 season is under way. Pocket schedules featuring Ken Griffey Jr. on the cover are available at the Sequim Gazette office at 147 W. Washington St.

Bruce earns top-five at Yakima Marathon

Christina Bruce, a senior at Sequim High School, finished Saturday's Yakima Marathon in three hours and 24 minutes, placing fifth among women and 39th overall.

Bruce, 17, finished 10 minutes behind overall woman's winner Mary Hanna, the course record-holder.

The race was Bruce's eighth marathon overall and the time qualifies her to run the Boston Marathon in 2010. She ran the 26.2 miles in Yakima as a 14-year-old in 2006.

Walkers target Marymere Falls

The Olympic Peninsula Explorers Volkssport Club hosts a group walk to Marymere Falls on April 11.

This is a walk through old growth forest up to a 90-foot waterfall along beautiful Lake Crescent, with views of the Olympic Mountains.

Walk distances are five or 10 kilometers.

The group meets at Albertson's grocery store, 114 E. Lauridsen Blvd. in Port Angeles, shortly before

9 a.m. to sign in.

From there the group carpools the 17 miles to the Lake Crescent Lodge to begin the walk.

No pets are allowed, and strollers and wheelchairs are not recommended.

Shoreline golfer gets first ace in Sequim

David Harrison of Shoreline sank his first hole-in-one on April 5, at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course.

Harrison used a 7-iron to drive the 147-yard 17th hole.

Wilderness workshop set for April 17

Stock users interested in learning more about packing techniques, "Leave No Trace" principles and using stock animals, such as horses, mules and llamas, on Olympic National Park trails are invited to a one-day wilderness stock packing workshop.

The free workshop is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. April 17 at the park's stock corral near the Elwha Ranger Station.

The Peninsula Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen provides a chili and hot dog lunch for a $3 donation.
