Avalanche rolls to the top

Despite missing four of their best players, the Olympic Avalanche girls basketball squad went 4-0 and took first place in the eighth-grade division at Port Angeles' May Day Roundball on April 25-26.

It was the team's fifth tourney championship of the season.

The Avalanche opened with a 38-32 win against the Portland Runnin' Rebels. Krista Johnson took the scoring load by hitting for 26 points, including four three-pointers, and added four steals. Haleigh Harrison added 13 rebounds as Olympic out-rebounded Portland, 36-23.

In game two, Olympic topped the Eatonville Lady Cruisers 47-31. The Avalanche started the game on a 10-0 run and led 20-14 at halftime.

"We ratcheted up the pressure in the second half and pulled away," coach Joe Marvelle said.

Johnson led the team with 23 points and Harrison had six rebounds. The Avalanche committed just eight turnovers all game.

In Sunday's semi-final against the Sumner Lady Spartans, Harrison guarded the Spartans' 6-foot 2-inch post and held her to just four points as the Avalanche won 33-21. Johnson had 13 points and four steals while Macy Walker added seven points and four steals.

The final was a rematch between the Avalanche and Eatonville, and once again the Lady Cruisers were no match for Olympic's scorers. The Avalanche won 39-19. Krissy Marvell hit a three-pointer in the first half to give Olympic a 14-12 lead they never relinquished. With the Cruisers focusing on Johnson, Walker stepped up and scored 17 points, including 7-of-12 from the field and three three-pointers. Olympic out-rebounded Eatonville 36-23, thanks in part to Lexi Besand's nine boards.
