Pirates drop 2 in final doubleheader

The Peninsula Pirates' season is over - and not a moment too soon.

A 33-game season fraught with injuries, forfeits and losing streaks is over after Peninsula dropped a doubleheader at Skagit Valley on May 8.

The Pirates fell 11-3 in game one and 9-1 in the second game.

Shortstop Molly Fletcher was 3-for-3 with three steals in game one, but the Cardinals, led by former Sequim High star Chantal Hughes, out-hit Peninsula 7-4 and took advantage of four P.C. errors. Hughes homered in the win. Carly Swingle took the loss.

In game two, P.C.'s Brittany Norton pitched a complete game but the Cardinal 11-hit attack proved to be too much. Fletcher and Colleen Murphy-Carey had two hits apiece.

It was a season that got off to a rough start when the Pirates lost two starters to academic troubles at the start of spring quarter and then were plagued by injuries.

The Pirates finished with as many conference wins (five) as they did last season; in 2008, Peninsula was 5-31 in NWAACC play, 7-36 overall.

Bellevue took the NWACC North Division crown while Shoreline, Olympic and Everett each advanced to the conference tournament.
