Wolves prep for postseason with wins

Sequim's volleyball squad closed out its 2009 regular season campaign with a pair of wins last week, including a three-set drubbing of defending Olympic League champ North Mason.

Sequim (10-2 in league, 11-3 overall) heads into the West Central District this weekend with a first round bye.

The Wolves face the winner of the Olympic League No. 3 seed/Nisqually League No. 2 seed contest at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.

A win there puts the Wolves in the finals, likely to face the state-ranked Fife Trojan squad. A loss means Sequim needs to win twice for one of the district's two state berths.

Sequim warmed up for postseason play with a pair of three-set wins last week. The first came Oct. 27 with a 25-23, 25-9 and 25-9 victory against Port Townsend.

Two days later, as Sequim fans honored five seniors - Sierra Clark, Sarah Donahue, Keli Haffner, Rebekah Kirsch and Caitlin Pallai - in their final home match, Sequim survived another close first set before sweeping away North Mason's Bulldogs, 26-24, 25-13 and 25-14.

It's the first time Sequim's beaten North Mason twice in the regular season since 2002. That year, Sequim placed eighth in the class 3A state tourney.

Last year at districts, the Wolves beat Eatonville in the first round to avoid elimination. After a loss to Fife in the semifinals, they topped Washington three sets to one, earning a berth to state. At the state tourney, Sequim went 0-2, losing to Selah - the state runner-up - and Hockinson.
