P.A. powers past Sequim

Brutal. Painful. Ugly. Take your pick.

The Sequim-Port Angeles girls basketball rivalry was all of that and more as the Roughriders, the state's No. 7-ranked 3A team in the state, handed Sequim an 84-20 loss in front of the P.A. hometown crowd on Feb. 2.

Jessica Madison scored 26 points to lead a trio of double-digit scorers in the lopsided decision.

Lea Hopson led the Wolves with 12 points. Just three other Wolves - Caitlin Wiker with four points, Katrina Ignagni with three, Lindsey Soha with one - notched scores in the loss.

"We just didn't play as a team," Sequim coach Stephanie Lewis said. "I don't know if it was because it was P.A. or what. It seemed like they could not miss."

For much of the first half, the 'Riders rarely did. Madison, the uber-scorer who managed to tally 22 points in an "off" night the last time these teams played - a 73-25 Roughrider win in Sequim in December - fueled the green and white as they swiped passes and canned open shots with relative ease.

When the league leading 'Riders weren't on the mark, their ferocious rebounders did the job. P.A. out-rebounded the shorter, younger Wolves 58-17. Skylar Jones led the team with 10 rebounds, one of five Roughriders with at least five boards.

Port Angeles led 21-5 after one quarter and 47-12 by halftime.

Lewis said a bright spot was the play of Ignagni, the 5-foot- 8-inch senior post player.

"She has really stepped up, played solid defense and setting screens to get people open," Lewis said.

The Sequim coach also credited Hopson with attacking the basket with aggressiveness.

The Wolves (0-13 in Olympic League play, 0-17 overall) were slated to host North Kitsap on Feb. 9 - results were unavailable at press time. Sequim hosts North Mason on Feb. 12 in their final home game of the season.

The Wolves are at Olympic (Silverdale) on Feb. 16 for the season finale.
