Wolves' golfers sweep Eagles

The course may have been sprinkled with rain, but Sequim's golfers remained untouched.

The Wolves had a relatively easy time dispatching the Klahowya Wolves last week on their home course at The Cedars at Dungeness.

Behind Zoei Zbaraschuk's 18th-consecutive match with medalist honors - a streak dating back to her freshman season - Sequim's girls handled the Eagles 92-62.

Zbaraschuk scored 33 Stableford points, backed by Kim Duce's 26 points, Hailey Estes at 20 points and Ashley Morton with 13 points.

"The girls did very well in the wet conditions," Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said after watching his team improve to 2-0 on the young season. "The total score we had was very good considering our No. 4 golfer could not attend due to a school project."

Sally Fletcher and Becca Heyser led Klahowya with 19 points each.

On the boys' side, Ryan O'Mera tied for medalist honors with Klahowya's Garrett Kitchel with 14 Stableford points, but

Sequim's strength - its depth - carried the boys to a 60-33 victory.

Jake Dethlefsen, Steve Loerlein and Casey Torres each shot nine-hole rounds of 43 for 12 Stableford points and Ezra Perkins added 10 points for his round of 45.

"We were pretty solid right down the line," Sequim coach Vic Quinet said.

On March 22, the Wolves posted a 124-90 win versus Chimacum in a nonleague, 18-hole match. Loerlein (round of 78), Torres (83) and Mallory Maloney (83) each set personal bests on the course.

"The kids are starting to pull together," Quinet said.

The pair of wins this week gives Sequim's boys a 3-0 mark.

Both teams are on spring break until they travel to face North Kitsap on April 8.
