Mason edges Sequim in first dogfight

The road to the Olympic League title looks like it passes through Belfair once again.

North Mason's bats and some uneasy Sequim defense led to an 8-5 Bulldog win in Sequim on April 12, keeping the Belfair school undefeated in league play and on the road toward another league title.

Sequim rebounded two days later with a 9-2 win at Kingston.

Sequim starter Demiree Briones struck out 13 Buccaneers and walked none in the complete game win while teammate Lea Hopson paced the offense with two hits, including a home run.

Maddy Zbaraschuk had a double and triple while Lauren Hendrickson was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles as

Sequim added to their 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth and four in the seventh.

Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs pounced on the Wolves for five runs in the first three innings and held on for an 8-5 win.

The Wolves, down 2-0 after a half-inning, touched up Bulldog starter Emily Anderson for three runs in the first.

But Anderson settled down for the rest of the contest, giving up just two more runs in the seventh and striking out 14 Wolves. She helped her own cause with a double and three RBIs at the plate.

Hopson homered, Briones had two RBIs and Chelsea Winfield was 3-for-4 to fuel the Sequim offense.

But five Wolves errors gave the hard-hitting Bulldogs too many open doors.

Sequim was scheduled to host Klahowya on April 20 - results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves host rival Port Angeles on April 21, then face Bremerton on the road on April 23.
