TNT fastpitch takes second place in Tacoma

Sequim's TNT Fastpitch team, a select softball squad, finished in second after a one-run loss in the championship game to the Hoquiam Bombers at an eight-team tournament in Tacoma last weekend.

On Saturday the squad went 2-1, topping the Capital Lady Outlaws and Montesano Bulldogs and losing to the Seattle Adrenaline by a run.

Seeded in the gold division, TNT topped the Puget Sound Lady Vikes 7-2 in the semifinals.

In the championship game, the Hoquiam Bombers edged TNT 5-4.

"We could have won that game but a few errors here and there (were the difference)," said TNT Fastpitch coach Dave Bentz. "We're doing well and doing better every time, too."

Bentz said top pitching came from Makayla Bentz and Melissa Lewis. Alexas Besand led all TNT hitters with a .417 average. Hannah Grubb made a spectacular catch in center field to end a game while Bailey Rhodefer and Mary Lou Clift each hit game-clinching home runs during the weekend.

The TNT squad also had a successful run at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Tri-Cities April 10-11, going 4-2.

TNT is set to play May 15-16 in Marysville at the Patriot Invite, where 40 of the region's best youth fastpitch teams are scheduled to play, Bentz said.
