Zbaraschuk signs with Sonoma State

Between sips of soda and bites of dinner, Zoei Zbaraschuk signed away her future.

The Sequim High School senior signed on to play golf and attend Sonoma State University next fall.

Zbaraschuk announced her decision at a gathering of family and friends at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course on April 28.

With a 32.0 Stableford point average (tops in the Olympic League and West Sound region by a long shot) and boasting medalist honors in each league match dating back to her freshman season, Zbaraschuk had plenty of options of where to play next. Following her junior season, she used a recruiting assistant out of California to help narrow her choices.

"It was a really long process," Zbaraschuk said.

One of her choices was Sonoma State, located about an hour's drive north of San Francisco.

Coached by Val Verhunce, the Division II Sea Wolves have a team of about 10 golfers. Zbaraschuk would be the lone out-of state player in the bunch.

"I loved it," Zbaraschuk said about her visit to the school. "I was super nervous. The coach could tell I was really nervous."

Zbaraschuk picked Sonoma State rather than her other favorite, Concordia University in Portland, Ore.

The Sequim prep star said Verhunce indicated she'd be in the fourth or fifth position on the team.

"It's really competitive, which is good," Zbaraschuk said. "I want to work my way up. Hopefully I'll be on the travel squad."

She said she's planning on a business marketing major.
