Sequim aims for return to state

Sequim Gazette

The rules may have changed, but Sequim’s golfers are hoping for a repeat of 2010.

Sequim saw six players — three each from the girls  and boys squad — advance to the state 2A tournament last season.

This season, the challenge gets tougher while play format is different. League 3A foes North Kitsap, Port Angeles and Olympic drop into Sequim’s 2A ranks this season. In matches, teams will count just the top five players and scoring is based on stroke play, not Stableford scoring.

Vic Quinet, head coach of the Wolves’ boys’ squad, likes his team’s chances with Ryan O’Mera and Mallory Maloney, both state qualifiers, plus district tourney qualifier Casey Torres, all back in the mix.

“Ryan played all the way through (the offseason), participated in a lot of summer events,” Quinet said. “Mallory came back stronger than last year.”

Also back are veterans Ezra Perkins and Josh Francis, plus youngsters Brendon Hudson, Jesse Francis and Anthony Pinza looking for a breakout seasons.

“We’re going to be pretty strong, (players) one through four,” Quinet said. “With the consistency of the kids, we should be pretty good by the end of the season. We’ve got a good chance of being near the top.”

Quinet expects Port Angeles to be among the top teams this spring.

On the girls side, coach Garrett Smithson loses stalwart Zoei Zbaraschuk (fifth at state in 2010) but sees state qualifiers Kim Duce and Hailey Estes back on the squad, along with district tourney qualifier Lisa Doan.
