Two place at Pony Club nationals
Sequim Gazette staff
Three local students participated in the U.S. Pony Club championships at the Pony Club Festival 2011 on July 18-22 at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.
Emily Dybedal, 15, a C1 rated rider, and Rio Mowbray, 16, a HB-rated rider, of Ranahan Pony Club in Port Angeles were among the 1,000 competitors.
Dybedal competed in Quiz, an unmounted equine quiz bowl competition, as a member of a regional team and took fifth place in the “Junior C” division. Individually, Dybedal took first in her division and 13th overall nationally.
Mowbray competed in Quiz as a member of “Senior C” Regional Team, taking seventh place in the team division. She took ninth place in her personal division and nationally.
Sarah Henry of Discovery Pony Club was a “catch” dressage stable manager for four riders on the Maryland Region Training Level Red Team. Together they placed fifth out of 15 teams in both overall points and in horse management.
Henry said she most enjoyed the educational component of the festival, especially training under modern pentathlon Olympic medalists in swimming, fencing and shooting. She participated in three days of clinics, which included carriage driving, horse anatomy, polo, lameness diagnosis and cross-country veterinary check procedures.
All riders competing in the championships previously qualified with top scores at their regional rallies throughout the country. They vie for national honors in the disciplines of dressage, eventing, mounted games, polocrosse, show jumping, tetrathlon and quiz.
The United States Pony Clubs, Inc. was founded in 1954 as a nonprofit youth organization to teach riding and horsemanship through a formal educational program for members 4-25.
