Golf: Sequim sweeps Vikings

Battling one of the top teams in the Olympic League on one of the league’s toughest courses in driving rain, Sequim’s golf squads had plenty going against them last week.

Apparently they had plenty going for them as well.

Ryan O’Mera and Hailey Estes led Sequim’s squads to a sweep of North Kitsap’s Vikings at the Whitehorse Golf Course in Kingston on April 11, helping both teams stay perfect in league play.

On the boys’ side, O’Mera shot a nine-hole 38 for medalist honors as Sequim topped North Kitsap by 21 shots. Backing him were Casey Torres (45), Christian Velarde (46), Brendon Hudson (49), Anthony Pinza (52) and Jesse Francis (53).

Mike Desmarks led the Vikings with a round of 44.

Estes shot a 47 for medalist honors as Sequim edged North by just nine shots (277 to 286).

“We experienced … three solid hours of rain,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said. “Whitehorse is by far the toughest course we will play all year long. The girls battled through the weather and a good golf team to stay undefeated.”

Backing Estes were Brianna Kettel (56), Caitlin Stofferahn (57), Vanessa Martinez (60) and Annika Lawrence (70).

“There are still five league matches we have to play but this was the one we needed to win to put us at the top with the rest of the league looking up at us,” Smithson said.

Karin Muggli shot a 54 to lead North Kitsap.

Sequim was slated to take on Olympic and Port Townsend on April 16.

The Wolves’ girls host Kingston on April 18, play at the Duke Streeter Tournament on April 20 and are at North Kitsap on April 23.

Both Sequim squads host North Mason on April 24.
