Still the one?
by MICHAEL DASHIELL
The Bucs, it seems, stop here.
After recent poor weather allowed one-loss Kingston to move ahead of Sequim and Port Angeles into first place in the Olympic League by percentage points, Sequim’s Wolves reminded the Bucs who the defending state champs are.
The Wolves bashed Kingston pitching for a 13-3, mercy rule-shortened victory on May 4.
Sequim was slated to play at North Mason on May 7 and at Kingston on May 8 — results were not available at press time.
The Wolves (12-1 in Olympic League play and overall) take on Port Angeles today, May 9, in the regular season finale, weather permitting.
Sequim plays in a sub-district tournament May 12 in Bremerton.
Against Kingston, Bailey Rhodefer had a home run, Columbia Haupt drove in three runs, and Amber Robb and Alexas Besand had two hits apiece in the six-inning affair.
Makayla Bentz went all six innings, giving up just three hits and two earned runs.
The Wolves took advantage of some wildness on the part of the Kingston pitchers, walking nine times.
Kingston took a 2-1 lead after two-and-a-half innings, but Sequim rallied for three runs in the third inning and six in the fourth.
With rain twice wrecking the Wolves’ scheduled game in Port Angeles, Sequim started last week with a home game against Bremerton on May 2, clobbering the visiting Knights 14-3 in six innings.
Rhodefer, Demiree Briones, MaryLu Clift and Rylleigh Zbaraschuk had three hits each and Kinzie Winfield had three RBIs in the rout.
Sequim led 9-2 after five innings and capped the contest with a barrage of hits in the sixth, scoring five runs to force the mercy rule.
Briones allowed just four hits and three walks in her six innings of work, striking out five.
Clift hit a solo home run to deep right-center while Rhodefer had two doubles and scored three runs. Pinch-runner Darian Hall had a steal and scored twice.
Sequim got to Bremerton starter Rachel Pratt for 18 hits and 11 earned runs in five-plus innings.
