Baseball: Sumner tops Sequim in district opener

Sumner made Sequim’s ride through the district playoffs a difficult one by putting the Wolves in the consolation bracket earlier this week.

Sumner broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the sixth en route to a 5-1 win on May 8.

Logan Christiansen struck out six and gave up just one hit to the Wolves in five-and-a-third innings, and Gage Whitehead closed out the contest as the Sumner duo combined on a three-hitter.

Sequim starter Kyler Johnston tossed six innings, giving up seven hits while striking out four. Jake Hudson gave up one run in relief.

Zach Springer, Karsten Wake and Taylor Washburn had the only hits for Sequim.

Luc Powers-Hubbard paced the Sumner offense with three hits and two RBIs.

Sequim plays Port Angeles on Saturday, May 12, in Bremerton — needing to beat the Riders and win two more for a regional berth.
