Football: Bulldogs get by Wolves in Belfair

The Wolves' season ended a little like it started: messy and far from the playoffs.

Playing on the road in wet, muddy conditions with a depleted roster against a playoff-bound North Mason squad, Sequim kept it close for three quarters before the host Bulldogs pulled away for a 28-6 win.

The loss closes the book on Sequim's season, one that saw the defending Olympic League champs fall to 2-5 in league play and 2-7 overall.

For the first time in eight seasons, they'll be at home for the playoffs.

Sequim started the game strong, recovering a Tommy Renne fumble on the Bulldogs' opening drive. Lopaka Yasumura, who finished the game with 197 yards on 22 carries, broke open the scoring with a 19-yard scamper.

Sequim held a 6-0 lead until 5:22 left in the third quarter, when North Mason's Chase Schoonhoven recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone, giving North Mason a 7-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Bulldog quarterback Matt Becker found Levi Rowland from 14 yards out for a score and 14-6 lead.

Renne, who finished with 100 rushing yards on 16 carries, added a pair of touchdown rushes to seal the win late.

Sequim's Austin Law played his first game at quarterback in place of Jack Wiker and had five passing yards and ran for another 20.

Last week, SHS head coach Erik Wiker was hoping to get his team a 10th game of the season — normally not a problem for the perennially playoff-bound Wolves until this season — but Dave Ditlefsen, Sequim High School athletic director, said the school was having trouble finding an opponent and will not play a 10th game this season.

North Mason plays South Puget Sound League champ Sumner in the first round of the playoffs.

The Bulldogs also snapped a 12-game losing streak to Sequim, dating back to 2000.
