Men's basketball: Peninsula falls in matchup of NWAACC giants
Round one goes to Edmonds.
The Tritons got 31 points from Shaq McKissic and 27 from Ricardo Maxwell as they topped Peninsula 104-89 on Jan. 9 in a battle of the NWAACC's No. 2-ranked teams.
McKissic hit three of Edmonds' 11 3-pointers and the Tritons sank 61 percent of their field goal tries in the win.
Maxwell and McKissic had eight assists each for Edmonds (2-0 in NWAACC play, 12-2 overall).
Edmonds made 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch to secure the final score.
Xavier Bazile, who Thursday was named the NWAACC Player of the Week, led Peninsula with 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including six 3-pointers.
Salim Gloyd added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates (1-1 in NWAACC, 10-5 overall). Djuan Smith added 14 points.
Peninsula was up 78-77 with a little more than six minutes to play, but the Tritons outscored P.C. 27-11 from then on.
The two teams are tied in the NWAACC Alaska Airlines Poll at No. 2, a spot behind Lane.
"We ran into a buzz saw tonight," Peninsula coach Lance Von Vogt said.
"Give Edmonds credit for playing so flawlessly and shooting the ball so well. It was the best display of offense anyone has played against us during my three years at Peninsula. Defensively for the most part we had very good effort, but our execution and discipline were lacking at key moments. We made too many high-risk chances that didn't pay off and Edmonds capitalized on those mistakes throughout the contest."
Peninsula looks to rebound from its first conference loss when it takes on Skagit Valley (0-2, 7-8) at home on Jan. 12; game time is 7 p.m.
Peninsula and Edmonds meet again Feb. 6 in Port Angeles.
