Sequim quartet earns Taekwon-do black belts
For the past six months, four students from Bodystrong Taekwon-do have been preparing themselves for their black belt test.
Each student needed to have trained a minimum of six months since passing their last test and completed at least 20 hours of community service. The student needed to be ready to be tested on any part of the national standardized curriculum from white belt through to this, their black belt test.
On Dec. 14, Master David Mason conducted an examination in Sequim, of five students eligible to take their black belt test. The fifth person testing traveled from Vancouver, Wash., to take part in the test.
The four students from Bodystrong were successful and achieved their black belt.
The successful candidates from Sequim were:
Linda Allen, a local veterinarian, who started Taekwon-do as a form of exercise with structure. Allen embraced the martial art for self-defense and personal development. Allen achieved the highest score in the written test at 94 percent.
Kyle Morton juggled Taekwon-do with sports and school work. Through exercising one of the tenets of Taekwon-do, perseverance, Morton successfully overcame these challenges and performed with confidence at the test.
Holly Gauthun is a student at Fairview Christian school with what instructors say is an incredible work ethic. During Gauthun’s test she demonstrated superior technique when she threw Allen, turning her upside down and avoiding being choked from behind.
Trenton Phipps has been practicing Taekwon-do for nearly six years and at age 12 was the youngest candidate at the test. By the time the test was through, Phipps’ experience showed: he was named the best at test.
The black belt test consisted of:
• Written test with a passing score of 70 percent
• Perform six patterns out of a possible nine (a pattern is a set series of movements ranging from 19-38 movements)
• Advanced kicking techniques
• Defend and counter attack against an attacking partner
• Fight another candidate demonstrating advanced techniques
• Perform a pre-arranged demonstration of throws, take downs, joint lock and chokes
• Demonstrate throws, take downs, joint lock, chokes and use of pressure points against an attacking partner
• Break 1-inch wood boards with kicks
• Break concrete tiles with hand strikes.
