Track & Field: SHS boys knock off Vikings, Knights

Through last week’s Olympic League meet at Bremerton, Sequim’s boys track squad has been unbeatable. Sequim’s girls, nearly so.

The Wolves’ boys improved to 6-0 with a double-dual meet win April 24 against North Kitsap’s Vikings (82-62) and Bremerton’s Knights (86.5-56.5). Sequim’s girls dropped their first league decision to powerhouse North Kitsap (91-55) but easily outpaced their Bremerton hosts (100-42).

C.J. Daniels led the Wolves’ boys with wins in the 800- and 1,600-meter races, backed by teammate Mikey Cobb, who placed second in both.

Sequim’s 3,200-meter distance crew of Brendon Despain, Peter Ohnstad, Chris Jeffko and Christian Ash swept the top four spots, while SHS’s Daniels, Cobb, Despain and Ohnstad did the same in the 1,600.

Dylan Chatters won the 200-meter sprint with a personal best (24.00) and was second in the 100-meter dash.

Austin Sampson took top honors in the discus and Alex Barry won the javelin and placed second in the triple jump. Freshman Brendan Lauritzen was second in the shot put with a personal best throw.

NK’s Taylor Stephens won the high jump, long jump and 100 hurdles.

On the girls side, Sequim’s Sarah Hutchison won the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and pole vault. The Wolves swept the top three spots in the 100 hurdles — Hutchison, Mattie Clark and Katelyn Rogers.

Waverly Shreffler won the 400-meter race with a 1:02.76, just nine-hundredths of a second off her personal best. She took second in both 100- and 200-meter sprints.

Emily Webb won the 3,200 meter race and was second in at 1,600 meters, both with personal best marks.

Vanessa Martinez was second in the javelin and Rogers was second in the high jump.

North Kitsap’s girls had nine different event winners and swept all three top spots in the distance running events.

Looking ahead

Sequim and Olympic are in Port Angeles on Thursday for a league dual meet, the final league meet of the season.
