Boys tennis: Payne, Richards face early exit at state 2A finals

Sequim’s lone competitors at the 2A state tennis tournament, Brandon Payne and Matthew Richards, saw an early exit on May 30.

The Wolves’ doubles team lost to Coleman Schnebly and Erik Hurson of Ellensburg 6-4, 6-4, who went 1-2 in the tournament, in the first round in the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

The pair lost in the consolation bracket to Ryan Gubranson and Nathan Ellason of Tumwater 6-2, 6-2, who took sixth place.

Payne and Richards earned the fourth seed into the boys 2A state finals after going 4-1 at districts in November 2013 and were the first Sequim boys to play tennis at state since the 2010-2011 season.

Kingston’s doubles team Beau Rabedeaux and Tyler Shuey placed eighth and were the only players from the Olympic League to place in the 2A tournament.
